Lockbacks - Traditional Patterns (And Some Modern Variants)

Thanks, Kris. I spoke to Jerry that morning when you told him what you wanted. I'll be looking forward to seeing that baby when completed. Should be great.

MORE simply stunning knives Elliot. It would be tough to pick a favorite from that group.

Here is a "baby bullet" rendition by Tim Britten. I really like the stag and BG-42 is one of my favorite blade steels. It is very smooth and well made:

Damnit...I have to get me one of those....maybe when I get my surplus smarphone sold.

I remember that one well, Jeff. Glad you're still enjoying that one.

Elliott,

I hope you do not mind,as the maker, adding a few pictures of lockbacks that I have made in the past. Some examples that very closely follow vintage lines to more modern interpretations. From a makers standpoint lockbacks offer a unique challenge as compared to slipjoint construction.

Thanks, Ken, for sharing those. The only problem I have with any of those knives is that they aren't mine! :p

Tony Bose came up with this lockback whittler pattern with a wharncliffe blade earlier this year, I think. This one has vintage jigged bone scales. Photos by Kerry Hampton. Not my knife.

^^^^ WOW!!! That is a good example of WHY Bose knives are so sought after!

Thanks for posting it Mike...and good to see you on this forum. I recall seeing many exceptional knives you posted in the "Traditional" forum.

Peter and Don, glad you liked the pictures of the LBW. Don, is that a pattern you and Joe picked up when you were at Tony's earlier this year?

WoW, I see part of why I don't let myself wander into here to look around. I coul.... would become obsessed.

Hello to all. I first want to say that lockbacks have a special place in my heart at least traditional ones. I really love to build them as they present more of a challange as opposed to a slip joint mechanisim as Ken mentioned. Here are a few that I have made in the past. All of the previously posted knives are really cool. Hope you enjoy.

Mike, I didn't get that pattern. I don't think I have the time or Patience to build a lockback whittler!

Tony did have the blades and springs for several of these on his bench when we were there.

For well over 20 years, I've prayed that I would never become really fixated with folders. Whether simple slipjoint or highly engraved lockbacks, folders have always attracted me. I've felt if I began to collect, they would act on me like some habit-forming drug.

I seem to acquire a handful of folders every year, then six months later, sell them to friends, to "break" the habit. But seems that I always repeat. Threads like this make me salivate. I do really love the Bose and Pena folders. And I will always kick myself for selling a DHIII auto that had the most gorgeous walrus......

Anyway, love the folders, thanks for showin'.
