locking sak vs slippy sak..Your thoughts..

SAK Rucksak for me. Although I'm probably going to get an Outrider based on ROCK6's recommendation, because scissors are the one thing I miss on the Rucksak. I also prefer the longer saw on the Rucksak/Outrider.

My SAK goes on all treks with me in a small survival stuff sack. Ordinarily, I would also be carrying a sheathed bushie of some sort, so the SAK is intended as a backup survival tool. Here's a pic:

No one else has mentioned this model, so I'll explain my rationale. Basically, the Hiker is a Tinker with an added saw blade. The saw adds functionality w/o much of a weight penalty. Since my SAK is carried in a stuff sack in my pack, thickness is not an issue.

I also like having two knife blades, one smaller than the other for fine tasks and to provide a bit of redundancy for the main blade should it be broken or damaged.

The remaining tools (bottle opener/large slot screw driver, can opener/small slot screw driver, phillips head screwdriver and awl) provide enough functionality to keep most treks from ending in discomfort or disaster should no other tools be available.

I started carrying an SAK in my go everywhere survival sack after forgetting my bushie a couple of times and not even having anything I could easily cut cord with. My survival sack goes in whatever pack I am using for a particular trek and is never forgotten. It's got my fire starters, compass, mirror, first aid kit and whistle.

For me the Swisschamp/Huntsman and Farmer are my main SAKS.
However if i need to carry a locking SAK i take my Outrider or my OHT.
Victorinox lockblades work great.

However I am used to slipjoints and don't really feel under tooled without a lockblade.

But sometimes its convenient to have a knife that can be opened one handed so i often pair a SAK/multi with a single-blade lockblade knife.
Lately for lockblades i've been mostly using an inexpensive Remington sportsman (FAST edition) or a Buck 110.
The Buck is solid and is a good cutter. its so solid and heavy i think you could hammer with the thing (with the bolsters not the blade).
I've seen a few 110's whose bolsters were so dinged up that must have been used as a hammer!
lol!

The Remington has held up pretty good but....
Well the knife had loosened up a bit over the past 2 months (due to lots of flick openings, lol) so i decided to tighten it.
I tightened it fine but the metal in the torx screw head is very soft.
I don't think it will last more than 1 or 2 tightenings.
This was my first remotely "tactical" knife and now i kinda like the open-backed framelock design.
What i need is one of that style but with a bush-crafty style blade.
I may get a Spyderco Tenacious but it lacks the nobby guards on the blade that allow you to "push-and-flick" the knife opening.
I really like that push-and-flick function!
That has supplanted the spyder-hole as my favorite opening method.

Hmmm i've strayed off-topic ...lol.

Back on topic ummm the new Huntsman Lite looks interesting.
Regular slipjoint Huntsman plus a LED/Philips layer.
Woohoo!
:D
