Lockup problem with Zaan

A couple questions:

Are you the original owner? If not, I'm wondering if, by chance, this blade is not original to this frame/lock bar?

When you're testing the lock in the video, you're pushing so hard that your fingers are turning white and your hand is shaking. Is there any chance you are slightly disengaging the lock with your index and middle finger?

Do you always open it that slowly? Nothing particularly wrong with it, but it would seem that, with that gentle of an opening, the lock wouldn't really fully engage. Honestly, when I had an Umnumzaan that I carried daily, I almost always flicked it open. It was just so easy to do by pushing the stud straight up and it always seemed to fly open into position. *Yes, I'm aware of "no-flicking" thing Chris warned of and the potential warranty issues*

I'm not the original owner. Bought it here on the forums. There's no chance my index and middle finger are dislodging the lock bar. I was paying attention to that very thing. No, I don't always open it that slowly. If I open it "hard" then it locks up no problem. The issue is I can't tell exactly how hard to open it to ensure the lock won't fail.

No flicking, IIRC, had much more to do with wrist flicking. Swinging the wrist in a whip-like fashion when the blade is partially open.

I have never opened mine that slow..Maybe I would have an issue if I did.

It happens sometimes even when I go faster. As I said, the problem is where the threshold is exactly

I open all my CRKs very slowly and just opened several (2 each of Umnumzaans, 21s, 25s, Classics) as you did in the video. All of them had solid lockup, nothing like yours showed. I would send it in.

That's my very clear memory. "Thumb flicking" is fine. Heck, with a Sebenza, you can't really thumb flick. And Chris recommended a few wrist flicks after reassembly to seat everything.

Same here with all my various vintage Sebenzas and a couple of Umnumzaans.

This was used..correct? Do you know if it was ever heat anodized?
You would be hard pressed to tell if it was sand blasted after.

Don't think it was heat anodized. Titanium was scotch brited though. Emailed CRK this morning. We'll see what they say.

Did you let them know about the scotch-brite treatment? If not, I would definitely mention it.

Hey, Bilbo, I'm curious to find out how you decide to handle the 'Zaan. Please keep this thread posted with updates. I hope you can get yours dialed in so as to eperience the same awesomeness as the rest of us "boss" lovers.

Best of luck!

BilboBaggins,
I am terribly sorry for the misunderstanding with our customer service. Sometimes it is quite hard to tell between one persons 'soft' or 'slow' opening and the next via the phone. We usually try and do some trouble shooting from afar as to maybe fix the problem without having to send it in immediately and try not to add to the turn around time for our service department if we don't have to. After seeing your video we will need you to send the knife in for us to be able to even diagnose a remedy to the problem. The o-rings have nothing to do with the lockup in this situation. Please send the knife in for further inspection.

I do have to state, now seeing that it is a used knife (i.e. We don't know if the blade has been swapped) and has been modified there may be a limit to what we can do for you. Again, before I can say what we will and will not cover, please send the knife in so we can see how to address and hopefully remedy the situation. I don't like seeing a lock like this, and it is extremely rare that it would have left the factory with a lock functioning in this manner.

Hope we can make a solution for you. The service form is on our website and I look forward to seeing your knife.
Thanks Bilbo,
-Tim Reeve

This is a big factor in my discission to buying into the brand. Outstanding.

Man in my experience any problem with the lock on any CRK should warrant a trip back to Idaho. There are usually no home fixes in my experience!

My zaan came home today. They were very nice and called me earlier this week to let me know it was on its way. Apparently, the lockbar tension needed to be adjusted. Problem solved. They also sharpened it up for me and put a lanyard on it. Just wanted to give a big thanks to CRK and everyone who posted here giving me their thoughts and advice. Really glad to have it back. I forgot how awesome this knife is. Thank You!!!!
