Lofty Wiseman's parang

When the zombies attack, I want one of those

It (the Viking model) would do nicely. Sometime soon I hope to deck it out with some green canvas micarta.

It and the Bush Knife are my two favorite woods choppers hands down!

It seems the knife has been pulled due to crazy UK knife laws !

Here is the nearest version I have found.......

http://home.cogeco.ca/~aelias/limited.htm

From what I remember the original is 440 or 420 stainless, not the first steel I'd pick for a chopper anyway !

For what ever reason that the knife isn't available I can assure you that it has nothing to do with "crazy" UK knife laws. Knives bigger than that one can be bought and legally used here.

I handled that Parang once and was surprised with the lack of balance it had. If you are going to invest in a custom jobber, Diving Sparrow has a parang with alot of mass that is a nice critter. I only held the Wiseman parang though, I never had a chance to put it to wood, so who knows!

A year or two ago I read somebody saying the same thing on Britishblades, that it was unwieldy. Heinniehaynes was the last place I saw one for sale, I think it was about £120, so cheaper than an Ontario RTAKII.

I've read and watched youtube stuff where people say carbon is better for choppers. I'm not disagreeing with them but why do Condor make things in 420hc?

I think that Lofty's Parang and the Condor line are made from stainless because they are designed for work in jungles. With the extreme high humidity rust is a big problem.

I'd have to imagine that some of our resident makers could make one for well under $400.
Hmmm, perhaps if enough of us are interested we could start a build off.;)

The Condor Golok & Parang are both made from carbon steel.

Although they are not really parangs , the Kabar Kukri , camp knife , and cutlass machete are examples of easily purchased bush choppers. The only thing that throws me off a bit with the Kabars are the stick tang . I'd prefer a full tang for strength and " feel" . The grinds also. Convex is better, IMO ,but they could be ground so if desired.
Lofty's has a thin ground area a couple of inches back from the tip , as well as nearer the handle for finer work , the thickest being near the sweet spot. Something which I feel the condor's and kabars lack. The Kabar Camp is still a possibility. Cheap enough , although it needs the top guard ground off , and edge convexed;something I could do.
Once ground so , a diamond rod to touch up the serpentine edge would work in the bush , although any chipping if any needs to be filed out. Search continues.

I really like that Diving Sparrow Parang. Unfortunately, the price was even higher than the web-site indicated when I when I went to order one......

I have a couple of of parangs and goloks and I really believe that David Farmer is hard to beat in this department.......

Abe,

Thank you. I really think that you make one of the finest looking parangs I've seen. You shot me straight about the glitch when I contacted you, unfortunately the price change just pushed the blade out my reach at that time. Man I was disappointed... not by you, but I really wanted that knife:thumbup:. I'll be in touch....

Mike
