I was thinking of making a press form a log splitter. I got one that is 4 ton and has a 2 horse motor.
Is this worth bothering with or should I go bigger?

I just did a search on log splitter presses and I think I'll do it another way. After reading I think 4 ton is just to light.

When going with a gas powered log splitter press, you want a 7-10HP motor. If you convert it to electric, you want a 5HP motor. You really need 20+ tons. A 28tons splitter will work well. The frame on those little jobs won't take the stress load and will bend the whole thing in use. Usually ,you add stiffener gussets to the sides to make the press stronger, anyway.
Those cheap HF electric units say 2HP, but are not near that . 2HP in a real rating draws something like 22-24 amps under full load.As said, they are too slow (just a hydraulic jack with a wedge) and too low power.

For a hydraulic forging press you need ram speed and power. Those factors come from the pump size and the motor size. No amount of fudging in other areas will make the difference.

I have always wanted to use an adaptation of a hydraulic post pounder. Verry Quick action, basicaly a mini drop hammer type action. Its easily twice as power full as a large man on a 16lb maul, and atleast as many bpm.
