Nope. In Canada, you can carry whatever you like in terms of a knife on your hip. If it is a weapon, it can't be concealed, i.e a knife on your hip. If it is a tool, it can be kept in your pocket. In any event, the Tenacious is not spring loaded or gravity operated (if the pivot screw is done up tight)

i was in canada for two weeks, i got the impression that they dont really enforce knife laws at all, where i was a guest, the headline in the local paper said that once again they were the crime capital of the country,my host explained it to me..most if not all knife offenses occur at parties, usually people get stabbed because of brovado or temper ,alchohol is the biggest factor, and they are mostly kitchen knives

It is true, I have never heard of a crime committed with a folder. Once or twice I have heard of a bowie knife or hunting knife used, but that was out in the sticks where everyone carries a fixed blade. Most often, crimes of passion are committed with the weapons at hand. Even still, these knife crimes don't help with the public perception of folders as EDC's

I also live in Canada.
I was involved in a matter where the police showed up. I had my large Sebenza in my right front pocket, a comtec stinger in my left front pocket, a Hide away knife around my neck, a leatherman charge on my hip, and a tactical pen in my beast pocket.

A while later when everything was sorted out, I was released with out charges with my all my knives plus the pen. The only thing they took was the comtec stinger.

I told them I collect knives as a hobby and use them to cut up recycling, packages food, and that's why I had so many knives on me. :foot:

In reality it was quite embarrassing to get frisked with that many knives on me. I felt like some sort of freak. I'm just glad I wasn't carrying the cold steel kobun that night. Cuz it would have been rather hard to explain that one. ;)

I think I'll stick with the Sebenza and the charge from now on. :D

They were cool about the whole thing though. So we got to talking about knives. Two of them carried Spyderco police model's both in serrated edge, and the other guy had an Emerson of some sort.
I offered free touch ups on their duty knives but have yet to be taken up on my offer. :)

IMO it's all in the way you present yourself to the officers. I'm sure if I was dressed like a little gangster punk and showed no respect things would have went much differently.

Even if you were criticizing, I would agree with you. I have to order all my knives from the US as I can't find any of the usual suspects at a decent price in Canada. I understand that it is the economy of scale at work here. California has a larger population than all of Canada...

The only thing they took was the comtec stinger.

Why did they take your stinger? It isn't a weapon, its a leverage device. As an aside, I keep a piece of stock aluminum on my keychain, works a treat for SD

Shopping for knives in Canada is difficult; selection and prices are often unappealing. My solution is to buy on-line and ship to the US, I'm not that far from the border.

Exactly right my friend. I do the same thing. 5 minutes from the border :D

how much if anything do they charge postal fees, duty etc

Depends on the knife, the postal carrier and the customs officer. Postage is generally set by weight. I found that if you keep your value under 100 CAD they officers don't send you in to collect duties, but in most things regarding a peace officer, there is a lot of discretion afforded. Shave, dress sharp (herher) be polite and courteous.

Tips to prevent border hassle.
1) Have your passport at the page with the picture
2) Have the EXACT value (i.e invoice) of the goods coming across.
3) Turn off the engine, make sure the radio isn't on.
4) Be polite, courteous and open. Make eye contact.

The easier you make their job, the easier they will make your life. (Generally)

Yes most of the store's around here don't carry much of anything. And if they do it's way way over priced. So I either drive out to S&R knives in Toronto or order online\this forum if they don't have what I'm looking for. Customs isn't that bad. I've never had a problem getting any of my knives through customs. As long as it's legal I don't worry about it.
Sometimes they get ya with the fee's and other times they don't.

I told them I have server back problems and use it for applying precise pressure to key points my back. They didn't buy it. lol

Wrong it is illegal to carry a weapon in Canada, a knife used as a tool is ok to carry a knife carried with the intention of being used as a weapon is illegal
