Lonely knifemakers

Phillip, good point about the "bladesmith" answer. Most folks do just hear, "blacksmith" and either drop it or tell you they knew a blacksmith from XYZ back in the day.

Well, I will not hide what I am doing or making. And I do not care what those "rabbits" think. I like beer and steak, I make knives and like to shoot. That's what I am.

Oh no! You drink, Make Knives. Like Guns, and eat the poor animals???

There is no place for you in todays ordered society!

Make mine Medium Rare please!

Pass me that bar of steel!:p

Just for the record, I'm not hiding or advocating that for anybody else either. I'm just agreeing with Phillip that sometimes with some people, it's just easier to keep it simple. Most people don't really care what your answer is anyway, just like most people don't really care how you are when they ask how you're doing.

Not saying it's right... it's just how many people are. Personally, I wouldn't ask somebody how they're doing if I didn't give a shit... but many people just want to hear, "Fine thanks."

"The whole thing in a nutshell" (Papa Wickert) is that "You should try to never miss a good opportunity to keep your mouth shut." (Grandma Wickert) ;) :)

So , who are the sheeple going to go to 1st when the s**t hits the fan and they need to cut there food ? or are they going to demand that those that killed there food are responsible to cut it for them ??

Sorry for going off topic , but it drives me nuts and I am with Mike Lovett . Knives , guns and beer ( well not beer but a good drink )

Thank the Lord for Gene Martin living close, or else I might have to call someone in my family to talk knives and politics...and it's even nicer Gene being just slightly to the right of Atilla The Hun.

If they survive.. they can go to whomever they want... they wont have the tools needed to enforce anything so it won't really matter :)

I'm not hiding it either, but like Nick said, it's just easier and quicker sometimes to avoid a long explanation.

Also, knifemaking is what I DO for a living, it's not WHO I am as a person. I'd much rather talk about other things when I'm with family and friends.

I couldn't agree more:)

besides, when someone asks me what I do for a living it's easier just to hand them a business card

Some people may fear the handmade knife because it is sharp! The kitchen knives in their daily lives are usually dull!

You're assuming that we're sharing. :D

Besides, when we get to a SHTF situation, food won't come in convenient microwavable containers or wrapped in plastic wrap and styrofoam. Most won't know what to do with it, some won't even recognize it.

Generally, I know a few people that are genuinely interested in guns & knives that it is a pleasure conversing with them.

There are others that are generally accepting of them, but are mostly indifferent. I can talk to them if I sense they have an interest.

Then there are those who have strong opinions based on emotions and without any factual support. IMO, they are dangerous and not worth my time.

I got a 'thats scary' comment on Facebook just this week in reference to a pic of a 4" bladed bushcrafting knife. Good Lord, what do these folks cut their steak with? Depending on the crowd, I sometimes say that I am unemployed, and unemployable.

My first blade show as a spectator was so intimidating because of just this. LOOK at all these knifemakers I can talk to shamelessly about knives. What do I say, where do I start? Then I realized that these makers, like myself, go most of the year without anyone to talk to about knives. (Ever get a knifemaker on the phone, and suddenly you've been on the phone an hour and your ear hurts?)

Nowadays I have an apprentice in the shop with me. Thats nice. If I had a watercooler, we could have a normal office chat. As it is we scream at each other through our respirators when we want to talk....

Some times I tell them I'm a Retard person. They leave me alone.

Did I spell it wrong?
