I am thinking of making a blade with a 2 foot blade that could take heavy use. I am use to working with old saw blades and such for my stock removal and know that i would like something with a little more flex in to as not to break the blade if it gets stuck in whatever i am cutting. i was wondering if anyone could offer a good stock and supplier that would be affordable for a college student with limited funds.

Thank you for whatever advice you provide.

People who know better than I will chime in on this, but here's my advice:
5160 and 1050 through 1084 (and, some would say, beyond) are all great steels for long, durable blades. I'd personally lean towards 5160 because it is extremely tough and very easy to get the heat treat right with cheap materials (i.e. you don't need a special quench oil).

Two foot blade - Check
Heavy Use - Check
Flexable - Check
College budget - Check ($7.95)
Already heat treated carbon steel - Check

I'll take a Machete over a big thick chopper any day. They don't wear me out as easily and will take down a good sized tree. If you want to say you did something, then get some micarta and replace the handle.
