After a long hard day I finally finished up my Cutting Bowie for Tannehill. Forged from 3/8 x 1-5/8" 1095 (started with about a 11" piece). Knife is 14-7/8" x 2" wide, handle is 5", black canvas micarta. Really wish I would have made it about a month ago so I would be more familiar cutting with it, but will see how it goes on Saturday.
All forging done under the power hammer, used a hand hammer on it 2 times to bend the handle down a bit. The palm swell was forged in under the round part of the combo dies, the finger choil was forged under the power hammer using a piece of 3/4" round bar. I tell ya that power hammer saves a TON of time, no bladesmith should be without one (took me 10 years to figure that out).
Was a real fun knife to make, tried a new finish wich is a simple 220 grit belt finish, blended in with a Scotch brite belt, etched in Ferric Chloride then lightly buffed. I like the finish as it holds up well, is fast to apply and easy to maintain. Will be doing more like this as it is a good blend of showing the hamon, time management, and durability.
Any how, enough of my rambling here are a few pics of the Bowie and one of yours truly, after a long, hard day.
