After a long hard day I finally finished up my Cutting Bowie for Tannehill. Forged from 3/8 x 1-5/8" 1095 (started with about a 11" piece). Knife is 14-7/8" x 2" wide, handle is 5", black canvas micarta. Really wish I would have made it about a month ago so I would be more familiar cutting with it, but will see how it goes on Saturday.

All forging done under the power hammer, used a hand hammer on it 2 times to bend the handle down a bit. The palm swell was forged in under the round part of the combo dies, the finger choil was forged under the power hammer using a piece of 3/4" round bar. I tell ya that power hammer saves a TON of time, no bladesmith should be without one (took me 10 years to figure that out).

Was a real fun knife to make, tried a new finish wich is a simple 220 grit belt finish, blended in with a Scotch brite belt, etched in Ferric Chloride then lightly buffed. I like the finish as it holds up well, is fast to apply and easy to maintain. Will be doing more like this as it is a good blend of showing the hamon, time management, and durability.

Any how, enough of my rambling here are a few pics of the Bowie and one of yours truly, after a long, hard day.

Matt,

Beautiful lines and a "Brute" besides. Love your hamon as usual.

Not gonna make Batson's after all, so I'll miss seeing this. See you at Atlanta.

Whoa, that is a scary pic there dude. Well, I have been wanting to meet you, (I think:D), and at least now I know what to look for (or maybe to "look-out for").

Nice manipulation of steel by the way. Hope to see you at Batson's, come rain or shine.

Robert

The knife is awesome! I best it cuts like a laser

You are looking scary dude

... actually its very "Walker County" Alabama ;)

The Bowie does cut good, but im very rusty in cutting as all ive been doing is testing blades on my bamboo grove, havent really been doing any "tricky" cutting as they do in the competitions.

That is a cool looking knife and I don't doubt that it will cut like the dickens. And you're only moderately scary-looking. :p

Hey.. I AM smiling in that picture! I personally dont think its a scary look, but more of a TIRED look!

If it helps any... I think I forged that one listening to "The Flower Duet" (Lesley Garrett version), so I CANT be that bad

Roger, it does cut, wish I had a "ringer" to push it to the limit, as the cutting "competition" will be new to me. Do alot of cutting here, but none of the fancy stuff.

Looking forward to meeting many of you this weekend.

Beautiful Hamon. I really like this knife. You did real good, now go take a rest.

Good luck in the cutting competition.

Matt as always a great knife. Stop taking pics of scary guy's and pretending it's you

Now that is the way to break in the power hammer, Matt. 10 X 2 of 1095 should cut the mustard. Good luck, hope the weather is decent for the hammer-in.

The only thing scary in the picture is that mean lookin' bowie!

THAT KNIFE IS EFING AWESOME:eek::eek::eek:
Whew! Sorry for yelling. Got a little excited there.
I will have to add this one to the 'save for' shortlist.

So that's what Lamey looks like.
Guess you'll be crankin' them out with the power hammer.

Good luck in the competition, this beast is a beaut'.
Heard anything from Fikes,Matt?

Doug

Beautiful blade -- as usual. Love the working finish you did on it!

In my eyes it looks real fierce and wild. It might be the hamon which gives that sort of effect

I hope I could get a longer one from you Matt ;)

Thanks for showing it.

Should have used W2 ;)

I think you have found you calling. That is a good lookin cutter!

Man, your lookin more like a knife maker :)
