Long range project

Howdy Ray,

Talk about making up for lost time. You take two months off from the forge and then one day just pick up a hammer and knock out a behemoth blade. Wow, does that ever look amazing!

If you don't mind my asking, what was the glitch you had, and how did you resolve it?

All the best, Phil

Someone just had to ask. :D 99% of the false edges I do I grind in after heat treat. Normally this isn't a problem but when I ground the false edge on this one the blade warped. Once I decided what to do I got it fixed. First time I've ever forced a warp. I don't think it would have happened if the steel was W-2 . I sure wouldn't have used a piece of 52100 for a blade of this size intentionally. I did get the blade rubbed out and there is a nice hamon there. The first picture shows the blade and a view out the back door of my shop.

Now that looks like a lot of activity! That is gonna be one sweet blade!

Wow Ray,

Just caught this thread, I don't know how I missed it before. That blade is sure looking nice, and the view from your shop adds to it's beauty. I love the way you fit a piece of antler to a hunk of sleek steel. The shaping and contour of that elk crown....makes it seem as if the elk grew the antler....just for your forging.

Ray, what do you use to cut in your false edges? Flat Platen? Slack Belt? Contact Wheel....Size 10", 8", etc...?

I do the false edges on a flat platen. I also use a trick I developed not quite 10 years ago. I clamp the blade to a large piece of angle iron. The angle iron sits on a table. I'll set the platen to the angle I chose so I'm able to reproduce the angle with each pass.

That's sounds like a darn good idea Ray, I'll be sure to try my hand at it on the next blade.

Thanks a Bunch,

Bob

Now I've got something to do. I have a thin piece of wagon wheel for an S guard and a much fatter piece of wagon wheel for a spacer. I did a little hand forging on the piece for the guard but the spacer was cut directly from the wheel. I did do a little grinding on the fatter piece just to make it flatter. I also have another piece of wrought iron inset into the crown. I call this the pile stage.

I think I can picture this. Do you use any type of fence to keep you passes straight (when moving the angle-iron-clamped blade back and forth? I don't suppose you have any photos of this setup?

I'll help you see it. Close your eyes and envision a 3" piece of angle iron and a blade clamped on the vert section. The piece I use is maybe 16" long. I just free hand with the back and forth motion. All this does for me is keep the angle as I want it. I'm not working with a line on the spine either. Its all eyeball. :D

I've got the fittings close to what they will be looking when there finished. This knife is just to big for my light box.

Very cool blade Raymond. I really like the shape of that antler handle fits very nicely with the shape of the guard.

I don't know, Ray, I kind of like the first pics of the guard...:D Just joking, can't wait to see it done!

Ray I can sure see this one coming. Wish I were your customer. :D If I won the lottery I could just make it my vocation to collect your knives. Sigh. At least we get to watch you make them. This is fantastic Ray, thanks for all the pictures.

Other than doing a final rub on the blade this piece is done. I chose a clean section of the shop floor for the back ground for the pictures. I just happened to remember a larger light box I built awhile back. I'll see if I can get some decent pictures in that. Anyway this is what it looks like now.
