Long Term Impressions of the Military in CPM S30V.

:D

I remember a few years ago when you weren't sold on the thin tip on the Military Jim. I'm glad you got past that, and now appreciate the knife for what it is:thumbup:
Seems like these days you much prefer a knife with alot of distal taper, as do I.

Thanks for the review, and also for proving you don't always need the newest super steel to get the job done:thumbup:

I do a lot of cutting now at work and the Military just fits best for what I do. :)

Really like S30V with the edge I put on it, easy to maintain and it keeps cutting.

I get excited when I see threads that show love to the Spyd Military because it is my favorite and most used folder as well.
My S30V (digi camo + black DLC blade) has been carried and beat on for about 3 years now and it barely shows any signs of use other than a few small dings in the G10. The DLC coating holds up nice as well. I also have the CF/M390 Military, which does get used, but not often simply because the S30V version does everything so easily. It has given me an insane amount of confidence in S30V and I'll never get rid of it.

I think S30V is one of the best user steels out there now really, the way Spyderco heat treats their S30V is dead spot on IMO.

Wow. Amazing to see a knife being used and carried that long. I think a lot of us suffer from GAS (Gear Acquisition Syndrome) so it is nice to see a knife used and carried for so long. I just got my first Military last week after selling off every knife I own. I chose the Military because of its design and practicality. I plan on using this for one year straight exclusively and posting my thoughts through the year. Will make a post soon with pics and thoughts. I am glad I read this and this confirms my belief in the Military. Thanks for posting this. This is high praise for this knife coming from someone with your expertise.

I think you made a good choice and I am sure the Military will live up to what you plan to use it for. :)

I've read a lot of the hype about the Military but never actually thought I would like it. I just got one in a trade though and I expect I will get some good use of it, especially after reading this. Thanks for the info Jim. I look forward to using mine.

I bought the military and used it for a while then got a PM2 because of all the rave reviews and carried that for a few months. A couple weeks ago I went back to the military and have no desire to carry anything else. It's the one knife that feels right if you know what I mean.

i was convexing my ti millie for several months until i decided, what the heck, bring it down to a flat 10 degrees per side. and that's when i fully appreciated the s30v. it keeps a sharp edge longer than the zdp in my experience.

Great review of an excellent knife, Ankerson.

The Military is the one knife that I've carried more than any other that I own, or have owned, for over 10 years now. IMHO, it just cannot be beat as an EDC, especially the regular ol' G10/S30V version.....plenty of blade in a slim, lightweight package that just disappears in pocket. I've tried out other knives but the Military always ends up right back where it belongs.

I keep sayin it, I love S30 and S35 at 60. Fantastic steels when done right, great balance. Cool update, looks like many more years of use ahead.

Thanx Jim, Appreciate.

Hi Sal,

That's funny. :D

Jim

Just to chime in, and I know I've said this before, but another great thing about the Military is its superb handling. Especially in cold weather, this knife IMHO can't be beaten. Moreover, it's one of very few knives that IMHO really work in either hand...it's about as lefty-friendly as a liner-lock (or framelock, for that matter) gets. I've never been tempted by the LH version of the Military.

A soldier once took down an enemy helicopter simply by brandishing his Spyderco Military, instilling both fear and wonder in the heart of the enemy pilot.

Most of the Berlin wall was dismantled by two men, one equipped with a Spyderco Military, the other equipped with a left handed Spyderco Military.

One man, upon hearing the phrase "A bird in the hand is worth two in the bush." proceeded to use his Spyderco Military to decimate the bush. He preferred three in the hand.

Well, he could have just thrown it at the heli, too... ;)

Nice, Jim . . .

It's easy to forget about the icons like the Military when so much is happening in the knife world so fast these days but I think all who have owned and used a Military can attest to the awesomeness of this knife. The Millie is nothing less than a top value and worth more than the sum of its parts.

Obviously lots of Military fans out there - not hard to understand once you have owned and used one of these knives.

Definitely a hall of famer and with all the sprint runs and different variations users get a choice of what fits them best. Can't wait to see the military 2. Some small tweaks I'd like to see are bigger handle screws, tip up/tip down clip, and maybe some nice barrel spacers instead of the plastic back spacer.
Great write up

the military has to be my favorite edc of all time. i have a g10/s30v military with about 5 years of honest use on it as a firefighter/paramedic. it is the perfect knife for the job. it is also very handy living out in the country. it is just the perfect carry knife. i love it!

I think so for those who really use their knives and can carry a 4" blade legally I can't think of a better knife. :)
