Long Term Storage For Speed Safe Knives

Been hanging out here for a few months but this is my first post.....You guys really know your stuff.

I have established quite a collection of speed safe knives over the past few months and was looking for some insight as to the best way to store them long term. In other words, should I store them in the open or closed position to avoid premature wear to the torsion bars?

Thanks in advance for any help.

I store mine in the open position, just to be safe. However, it has been said that it really doesn't hurt the torsion bar to store them in the closed position.

YMMV

:)

I think of it in the terms of how long the knife sits closed on the shelf. I have bought Kershaw AOs 3 to 4 years old that snap open just fine right out of the box. That being said my storage setup is in the open position for all my most used knives, AO or not. As I rotate knives the unused ones get boxed and new ones made accessible in the open position. It is just the way I like to do it, it probably makes no difference.

I store 'em closed...Otherwise, with my bad-luck, I'd be cutting myself everytime I got near 'em if they were left open.:D.:D.

Hey Hawley,

Welcome to the forums.

First, Dann can cut himself with a roll of paper towels, so don't be surprised at this! :D

As for storage, I store my collectibles in the safe, blade open. I have made an extra shelf in there and leave them open. I do this for 3 reasons: 1) A closed SpeedSafe torsion bar is under load. And the longer they sit like this, the more chance of the bar to lose it's ability to store the needed load. 2) If it's a good enough storage method for Ken Onion, it's good enough for me. 3) Because I can. I do remove them every 3 months or so, and clean and inspect them, just as I do with my firearms.

My EDC rotation knives are stored closed, and as SOLEIL said, they can sit for years before they are opened without problems.

This said, Kershaw will warranty your knives for their lifetime, for normal wear and tear. The torsion bars fall under this warranty, so if one ever fails, give em a call and they'll ship some out, or you can send the knife in for repair.

Again, welcome, and whatchya got in that collection?

Yeah, what's in your collection?
Pics would be nice, and don't worry if they're of poor
quality, Riffraff will fixem for ya. ;)

I store mine open, but like the others have said, it really
doesn't hurt to store them closed. Just go with what's
convenient for you.

Welcome to the forums.

Thanks for the responses!

My "collection" isn't all that impressive yet, but, I'm working on it. Right now, I have 7 leeks:

1660CB
1660TIZDP
1660PGT
1660G10
1660DAM
1660OCC
1660BW

A Tyrade and a JYDII lie somewhere in my future. I used to be an SAKaholic but I've caught the Kershaw bug.

Nice collection of Leeks. One can never have to many Leeks.

Oh, you'll never get rid of that Kershaw bug. ;)

Very nice set o Leeks!

I've been looking at the BW one...looks interesting!

It's a good EDC beater. The anodized handles have a fair amount of grip without aggressive texture and the A/O is lightning fast with the liner lock. The "downside" is the 440A blade although it's held an edge fairly well for light duty cutting tasks.

Can't do it. Knife talk at work keeps me sane. Without morrowj, I'd have gone off the deep end long ago.

Store em closed. It's safer, and just like anything Kershaw, if it by chance does wear out, they will warranty it...best warranty in the biz, hands down.
