Long term use and care of a GEC boys knife

I've got an all-steel #15 as well, a clip/pen Charlow. The bolsters, scales, and blade have all taken patina, but no problems with rust (despite sweaty summertime jeans pocket carry, and all). I just keep it clean-ish, and oil the joint once in a while.

Same here. Oil the joint maybe once every other week. A quick wipe the blade after each use on my tshirt or jeans and that's it. Rust in my case is in the form of dark pepper spots from perspiration. Not a big deal to me, but others may find this more bothersome.

Just use mineral oil on it. If you get it wet make sure you dry it A trip through the washer won't ruin the knife :-) Jake

I've had mine, a spear point single blade #15 in ebony, in my pocket every day for the last few months. Getting a little patina on the blade and a little darkening and maybe very little light spotting of the backspring, but nothing bad. It's proven to be a great knife for me. Love the spear blade shape and the 1095 just takes a great edge. After cutting some serious cardboard up or something it just takes a few strokes on a stone to bring it back.

Jack,

Not sure but in my experience at least the BOLSTER steel is less prone to coloring/staining than the 1095 blade. Is this your experience in the humid climate where you reside? Others chime in here also as I'm curious about the bolster vs blade differences in their reactions to the environment and use.

Yes, that IS my experience here too, where currently it's so wet there are folk growing gills and webs between their toes! :D

I bought a #15 several months ago and just "discovered" what a perfect EDC it is, I have been treating it like I do all my other knives, if it gets dirty I clean it in the sink under running water make sure its dry, a drop or two of mineral oil in the joint when I think of it and sometimes very rarely I spray the insides with a little Balistol right before bed and throw it in my pocket in the morning and carry it. Knife care isn't rocket surgery or brain science, it's just a little oil and common sense.

Exactly. If your knife needs more or less care than this it will basically tell you if you're paying attention at all. Like anything else in life how it's used and what it's exposed to dictates the level of attention it requires. Generally it's very minimal.

Awesome pics guys! I somehow lost my (favorite!) boys knife after heavy use and am heartbroken. I'd love to get another one PLEASE hit me up!

Rest in peace GEC 15, wherever you are...:(
