Long time lover of Spyderco, but hate VG10

I don't mind it in smaller knives. The same goes for 154cm. In larger knives, though, as many Spydercos are--I'm talking Delica and larger--I want something with a bit better edge holding because I don't carry something that size unless I have work to do with it :)

My LEO work knife is a VG10 Endura. A few nights ago, at a car accident, i cut the front bumper off a Honda. The Endura and its blade were undamaged.

Most of this anti VG10 talk is the typical steel-snobery that's too prevailant. If these VG blades were accidently marked as something else, would the perception be any different?

For those who don't like VG10, please box up the blades and send them to my PO box. I will pay for the shipping.

I like the fine edge VG10 takes. For my uses, I've never had a VG10 blade chip and it holds a good edge. I've actually had it roll, but never chip. To each his/her own I guess.

i've found that VG-10 is chippy for me then again i push my knives hard with farm work

cpm-154 is my fav steel atm, even cutting into pots full of dirt and mud it hasnt chipped at all and is a breeze to sharpen

i'll take a cpm-154 para 2 any day *hint hint*

I don't really have a problem with VG-10, but it's not my favorite either. Most of my knives are either Benchmade or Spyderco (been picking up WAY more Spyderco's lately) and I prefer the 154CM blades on my BM's to the VG-10 bladed Spyderco's. For me and my limited sharpening skills I think both steels are about the same in difficulty of sharpening but I feel the 154CM blades hold the edge a little better. I don't think I can tell that one gets much sharper than the other, as I said I'm not an expert at sharpening so when they will shave arm hair I'm happy with the edge. I've only had VG-10 chip out on me once and it may have been my fault, I'm not a 100% sure. I used my Delica 4 to open the thick boxes that my new washer and drier came in, I followed the directions on the boxes for cutting completely around the base so as to be able to lift the box straight up and over the machines. Where I made my cuts they were sitting on a wooden pallet, I didn't see any nails or staples that I made contact with but like I said I'm not a 100% sure so I'm not going to bad mouth the steel for something that may have been my fault. Also the chips were very small and it only took about three sharpenings on the sharpmaker with the fine rods only to get them all out. I didn't mind them being in the edge because one I USE my Delica 4 so it doesn't have to have a perfect edge and two it wasn't effecting the cutting performance of the knife as far as I could tell for what I was using it to cut. Never had any rust problems with VG-10.

Now on a different occasion I was working and was using a rotary tool with a VERY rough grit sandpaper barrel that was old and pretty worn out and had been on the tool for some time. I needed to change it out in order to complete the job and I couldn't get it to come off. I mean I tried everything, screw drivers, pliers, WD-40 and it still wasn't moving. The ONLY cutting tool of any kind I had was my Delica 4 so out it came and cut through the barrel so I could finish the job. Needless to say it BADLY damaged the edge so I had to sharpen a lot of metal away on some diamond stones in order to get it back sharp. Now my problem is the point sticks out of the handle just a little when it's closed. I know all I really needed to do was grind some metal off the base off the blade but I figured I'd be better off letting Spyderco take it completely apart to do that so I sent it in to them.

I don't expect them to replace the knife or the blade because the damage done was completely my fault and I stated so in the inclosed note I sent with my knife. I just want to be able to carry and use it again because as it sits now in my pocket when I put my hand in the tip cuts me a little so hopefully they can fix it up for me but even if they don't it's no big deal because I can myself when I get it back. Just sent it in first so as to not void my warranty. Sorry I went on so long just wanted to get my experiences with the steel out there. I guess thinking back on it now VG-10 isn't bad at all IMHO.

I've never had a problem with VG-10. That includes Spyderco's and the classic Al-Mar SERE .

Spyderco's VG10 has always been problem-free to me. Easy to sharpen, reliable. Sorry to hear that some of you have had a bad experience with it.

Nothing wrong with vg10. I like my zdp, but i don't think the extra increment of performance is really worth the price. I probably won't buy it again unless i get a great deal.

Guess I should clarify, I meant 30 or 40 degress on a Sharpmaker. I use my knives fairly hard but do not abuse them. I have simply had better results with S30V, old skoll 440V, AUS 8 and even ATS 55.VG10 is not for me, but I am a big time fan of Spyderco Knives.

Never had an issue with VG-10. Used it in kitchen cutlery, and a few Spyderco knives. Not my favorite steel, but a very good one for what it is.

+1 that's one tough stainless steel missing from the spyderco catalog.

Ive been enjoying VG-10 so far. Actually sharpened it today for the first time with a old crappy lansky vise system, took a pretty nice edge better than I thought.

LOVES me some VG-10
Great steel for the price. Gets and stays very sharp.
I've chipped my Endura 4 (profiled THIN) several times while being careless and it always sharpens out easily.

I love VG-10, I took my delica 4 in VG10 with me overseas for a month and it stayed sharp for a long time.

My only VG10 Spyderco is my LadyBug, which I absolutely love because it's amazingly corrosion-resistant. I've never used it heavily in a way that might chip the blade, so I guess it depends on the use as to whether you like a steel or not. For carrying in your pocket and getting your fingers all over it every day without oiling/wiping regularly and it still not rusting, VG10 is a champ. :D

I've bought 2 knives this year in VG10, but I haven't had a need to sharpen them yet. One of them is a kitchen knife, and I may give it its first sharpening on the Sharpmaker this weekend.

I don't have any knives with VG-10 blades which I have used hard so I can't comment about how tough or etc. it is based on personal use of that type. But for light general cutting chores, I find it to be more than adequate.
