A little while back I posted pictures of a long Vanguard that I had bought. I learned who they were made for (Virginia Dept. of Game and Inland Fisheries) and ordered one of them. I think they're pretty inpressive and come in a nice (USA made) cherrywood case.

I just wonder if you hunters would be interested in this version if it was made a part of Bucks line up (without the blade etching and handle engraving?

Great detective work Dave finding the XL Vanguard's destination. I didn't think that it would turn out to be a public entity. I figured a hunt club or fraternal org.

I admire that knife.

Plumberdv is the blade the same shape it looks different to me the top one looks more narrow down bye the finger guard . As mentioned above I to did a little detective work and googled the words on that knife and it led me to the website mentioned above I ordered that knife about a week ago I think it looks great and the price wasn't bad either , there are other knives available that are worth looking at .

There is a tiny bit of difference at the base of the blades, but I think that's because of the way it was ground. the top knife was sold as a factory blem because of the small grind marks at that location.

I can only speak for myself,as a hunter/outdoorsman /guide I much prefer a 4 inch blade or even a 3 inch blade. The bigger blades are cumbersome working on small jobs, and almost always a smaller blade can do anything the bigger blade can.I would bet that it would make a great kitchen/camp knife though.

I would be all over it! I like the looks of it better with the 5 inch blade, a much nicer piece for sure. Thanks Plumber for posting this longer version of the Vanguard, I never knew it was out there until now.

Neither did I until I saw the FB offered in an auction. These aren't the only "different" knives that many never see. There have been other's that were produced as special projects that never got any public notice.

Nice find and great detective work on that one Plumber:thumbup:
I find the overall lines of the extended blade very pleasing to the eye!

I like it, it's about time there were some new variations of the venerable Vanguard IMO. How hard would it be to remove the etching on the blade and handle I wonder?

The etching on the blade is more like a pad print, you can't feel it, so I'd think it would buff off fairly easily. The lettering on the handle is etched or lazered into the wood, so removing it would leave a flat spot and who knows what it wold look like after that.

The knife makes me wonder who's idea it was to make the longer blade?? I wonder if it was something the customer asked for or if it was someone at Buck's idea. Mine is serial number 529 of 600, so it seems there are a few out there hiding. All the other Buck's that they've offered over the years seem to be a standard (a bit upgraded perhaps) model with just their logo on the handle and an etch or print on the blade (one has a cutout).

Thanks Plumberdv, I was afraid of that. I would order one if not for the handle markings.

I think it would be a good knife to have at the right price. I don't have the standard vangaurd mine is the guthook and I find that blade to be about the right length. I agree with previous post a blade that's to long tends to get in the way. I have the ergoskinner and its a cool looking knife but the blade is longer than I care for or used to (which probably has a lot to do with it).

My head just starts to spin when I see a nice knife, I would love to have a 5 inch Bladed Vanguard with NS/Bone handle, Man that would be pretty.

Thank you for the pictures of that VG. I have never seen that before & would like to have one of Buck ever offered that size. Looks great.

Since they just came out late last year, maybe they're a test run to see how they're accepted. But then, the Virginia website doesn't seem to be a great venue for a test run.

Decided to order one of these. I think I found it listed in the new newsletter (Special Projects). Like the looks of the 5" blade and I don't have near enough Vanguards. Wonder if I can find a sheath on Buck's website that would work if I wanted to carry it?
