It might have been a web special and not a build out. I'll have to round up the box and see what the label says.

Yep, that's it. For some reason I was thinking the handle was bluish and of course my terrible pictures didn't help matters. Charocoal is correct. Kind of a grayish color.

There were web special Vanguards in ATS-34 not long ago, but i remember them having rubber handles?

Mr. Badhammer thats a good one there with only 21 of them ever made , and yes it deserves a better picture ( someday I hope ) , is that a double strike on the ATS-34 or just a reflection .

Yep, double strike or a mis-strike. It's like they stamped it and it didn't work right so they did it again only it shifted or something. IIRC some others posted photos of theirs at the time these became available but I don't remember if mine was the only one like this or not?

Since the Vanguard with the ATS-34 blade is a buildout, there had to be a Special Projects or Limited Edition model that the blades were made for originally.

Does anyone have any idea what it was and who it was made for?

I can only speak for myself,as a hunter/outdoorsman /guide I much prefer a 4 inch blade or even a 3 inch blade. The bigger blades are cumbersome working on small jobs, and almost always a smaller blade can do anything the bigger blade can.I would bet that it would make a great kitchen/camp knife though.

I have to agree with Razor on this one as well- Not that I don't have longer blades but 3"-4" is plenty.

Thanks for the great photos and bringing this model to light Dave. I do like the looks and design of it.

+1

I got one of the buildouts a year or so ago that had the indigo scales with ATS-34 blade. If they made that again in this 5" length even without a full tang I'd be all over it.

Should have said "charcoal" scales not indigo.
Yes, of course ATS 34 would be a nice option as well, or even BG42 steel.
Sorry, I forgot about that marks of steel at the beginning.
