Longer sharpmaker rods?

Sitting here working on my new 204D rods trying to knocn down the factory angles on my FFG endura (going pretty quick, too) and I got to thinking... On this long'ish blade a bit mroe stone would really make sharpening easier. Is anybody aware of a source for rods which will fit the SM while providing a longer honing length? I'm thinking as far as grits go I'm quite happy with my D/M/F split, although time will tell with the diamonds, but I just think it would be nice to have more surface to work with. Any thoughts?

Most of my sharpening habits, over 20 years or so, have been built on using smallish hones (6" or shorter). I've been in the habit of using a draw stroke, with the tip angled upward at the start, and drawing the blade diagonally across & down the length of the hone. This allows for sharpening of blades much longer (up to 8" or so) than one would ordinarily assume with 'short' hones. For one not accustomed to doing it this way, it might initially seem awkward. But, it doesn't take long to get used to it.

There's another recent thread going here, from someone who has used a longer diamond 'honing steel' in his Sharpmaker (just happens to fit). Here's a link:

Along similar lines, you might be able to find some wooden dowel of appropriate diameter (maybe 3/8" to 1/2" or so), cut to preferred length, and wrap a piece of wet/dry sandpaper around the dowels (secured with tape, rubber bands or zip-ties). It's been done a lot, many threads on the subject over the last couple of years or so.

Interesting suggestions. I actually have a nice system using my DMT XC/C stones against the SM rods when I have to get real aggressive, I was just thinking for touchups and general sharpening long rods might make life a little easier.
