Longevity of Automobiles

I am looking into picking up a VW bus for my "indestructable" vehicle. I understand that in Africa they have been using them forever as safari vehicles!

Now... the parts themselves dont last long, its a continual repair project keeping one running, but I guess I'm dumb enough to think I could make one work! :footinmou

They made a Diesel vanagon in the mid 80's that had the diesel out of the rabbit dropped in the back (water cooled.) Very underpowered, but very good gasmilage for the amount of room inside! The only thing, the rabbit engine eats its self at 100,000 miles. VW makes an industrial 1.9 liter diesel that many swap in place of the rabbit motor... which makes sense... it goes back to my other post about keeping the engine from over working.

I'm a glutton for punishment though! :D

Cars in Cuba are lasting quite a long time. Maintenance is the key.

OK, but then Cubans don't keep their fin-tails for nostalgia's sake. They have to keep rolling what's available. It's not too commonly-known that virtually all of those Caddies, Buicks and Chryslers have Lada-engines/gearboxes under their sweeping bonnets...!
