I posted something about Lonnie inside of another thread...but he deserves a new thread.

I met Lonnie this last week-end at the Northwest Knife Show in Tacoma.

He is making some of the most outstanding work I've ever seen.

His knives and hawks just blew my mind!

Please do yourself a favor and check out his site...it's clean and easy to follow.

His display of work was breathtaking.

Me likes the Dragon Slayer.

Nick - thanks for the post.

Just think, if you hadn't put this up, I wouldn't have a Dragon Slayer on order right now.

By the way, I e-mailed Mr. Hansen with a bunch of questions - I know some people have, in the past, expressed concerns about 440V being a bit brittle, but with a proper heat-treat the steel can be brought up to 59-60RC and perform extremely well. Well, Mr. Hansen has his blades heat-treated by none other than Paul Bos... 'nuff said.

Edge-holding and stain resistance should be hard to beat on a properly treated 440V blade - both of these qualities will make this an excellent field knife for a guy like me who tends to pack light and get muddy

Wulf-

Congratulations! Speaking with Lonnie at the show I learned he heat-treats all of his high carbon and sends all of his stainless to Paul.

You will be VERY happy with your knife! The grinds on the dragon slayer are superb and the handle has a very warm and solid feel. Plus it's just awesome looking!

Please let us know what you think when you get it!

I just received the Dragon Slayer a few days ago. Nick - I owe you a big thanks for the referral - this knife is just outstanding!

Just look at it -

(Not the best pic, but I was in a hurry)

Here are some details (I just wrote up a brief description on my knife page:
A fast and furious fighter handmade by Lonnie Hansen of Spanaway Washington, the 13.5" Dragon Slayer boasts a 3/8" thick, 7 13/16" flat ground blade of 440-V, a steel known for excellent edge holding and stain resistance. Heat treated by Paul Bos, the blade was "hardened in an inert atmosphere, subzero quenched and double tempered" to a 58-59 RC. But there's much more to this knife than the blade. It also features a very comfortable titanium guard against a beautiful desert ironwood handle embellished with five black and white spacers. The hidden tang is about 4-4 1/2 inches long and the knife balances just in front of the guard, giving it a quick, responsive feel in both a forward and reverse grip. Further, the leather work is tremendous - a fitting home for such a fine blade. The tough leather sheath is adorned with a decorative concho and is held together with heavy stitching and a decorated rivet. A pin-locking retention strap keeps the blade housed securely in its sheath. Overall, an excellent package from a very talented maker.

I'll admit, I was pretty reluctant to buy a knife sight unseen from a maker I really haven't heard much about, but man, I really like this knife :D

Wulf-

Thanks for the report! :)

I'm really glad that you like it!

I think we will all be hearing a lot more about Lonnie in the future...

Nick

In Bob's words me likes a lot. A whole lot!
Thanks Wulf!

Nick, Wulf,

Forget the blade material, desert ironwood and fine craftsmanship!! It's that LINES of that knife that make it a WINNER :D

The Dragon Slayer caught my attention when that magazine article came out and I still think it's one of the best LOOKING fighters out there.

Me WANTS one!!

Neil

Neil - you think it looks good? Just wait 'til you feel it! Floats like a butterfly and stings like a bee ;) And yes, it has a very sexy profile. It doesn't surprise me that you like the lines of this knife Neil - I've used similar adjectives to describe the Small Tac/Utility you built for me.

By the way, Lonnie is a real pleasure to work with too. Makes the knife even more of a pleasure to own. :)

Nice knives! Great workmanship! Site was a little dark for me, and I don't mean depressing, I mean the black and purple made it hard for me to see as good as I liked. But a nice site otherwise!

Hey Nick! What few brains I have remaining were obviously scrambled by unexpected Sebenza purchase at the Tacoma show. I can't remember Hansen or his table. Could you please describe where he was in relationship to your table at the end of the "1st" row? Would appreciate it. Am pretty sure I have his card, but I just cannot conjure up any memories of his table or his knives.

That also reminds me, yesterday, in some thread on one of the forums, can't remember at all which one, someone from our area spoke of the Puyallup show. I've been to gun shows in Puyallup, but haven't ever heard of any Puyallup shows. WOuld love to go to the next one if there is one. Know anything about it?

Thanks,

Bugs-

I'm not sure why, but Lonnie didn't make it to the show on Saturday. He was only there on Sunday, and his table was in the left hand corner (relative to the entrance door).

His work is outstanding, I'm sorry you missed it. No offense to Wulf, but that photo doesn't show his excellent grinds and finish to their full depth. Great work...

I'm just glad we're getting his name out there more, he deserves it. :)

Nick

I want to thank everyone for your kind comments. I hope some day I will truly reach the standard I would like, but until then I will continually strive to improve. But is truly nice to hear encourging words from other truly excellent makers and customers. The Tacoma show was my first show and I had a great time meeting wonderful people and excellent makers like Nike Wheeler and Tom Ferry. I don't attend shows on Saturday instead you will find me teaching Bible classes. I really appreciate the Tacoma show coordinators for allowing me to only attend on Sundays! This makes attending shows rather difficult but each of us must first follow our personal convictions. Any way I thank everyone for your kind words and look forward to meeting many more steel enthusiasts in the up comming shows!
