well a friend left me a lot of stainless steel , 6' x 1 1/2 x 1/4
and a square about 2' x 2' x 3/16.
how do you go about cutting out blanks, when you don't know what it is that will need shipped off for ht.
what would you do no numbers anywhere.
vern
Well, mystery metals of that nature are nigh on useless unless you know somebody who can analyze it for you. The vast majority of "stainless" is not high carbon and so won't make a decent blade. The "good" stainless is useless unless you know what it is and how to HT it.
Where did your friend come across it? Could he ask them what it is?
Put a magnet to it.. If it is magnetic it would be worth seeing what it was. If not use it guards etc. I would guess unless your friend is into mold making or the like you have 304SS. It is non magnetic and cannot be hardened. Well you can work harden it will not make a good blade.
