Look for some general help. Looking for a knife I can abuse and trust my life to.

Hey everyone,

I am new to the forum (this is my first post) and I almost wish I never found it. Apparently knives have become my new addiction and I spend way too much time reading this forum than I really can afford to (I am law student and I put off my assignments to read on this forum/use this as a distraction :p).

So here is some back story before I get to my questions. I used to EDC a Gerber evo Jr and I was looking for an upgrade. After hours of research and reading forums on knives and posts on different types of steel, I finally decided on the Kershaw Blur in green with the tanto tip and partially serrated body. I chose this because it can do everything I need it to (slices fine, has some serrations for cutting through rope/tape, and a stronger point for stabbing zombies). I'll admit the Gerber Evo Jr even cut everything I ever needed it to (I mention this so you can understand I really don't use it for heavy use). I am quite happy with the Sandvik 14C28N steel and how sharp it is. I am slightly disappointed with the DLC coating as I sliced open a soda can and it removed some of the coating (not much, just a little). But overall, I love my blur. It's quick, well made, and I am sure it could handle any medium duty work I throw at it (I say medium duty because the tip is very fine and not very thick at the tip so I feel like any sort of prying or chopping would break it. I realize knives are never meant to pry but from what I read ZT knives can pry a little without damage). Either way, I am sure the blur would never let me down.

That being said, I am looking for a knife that I can really abuse and I mean ABUSE without having to worry about nicks, chips, and breakage. I don't do much camping or wilderness activity, but I'd like to and it's a hobby my girlfriend and I are looking to get into. Now, although I am sure my blur could handle the stuff I would actually do, I want a knife I will buy and never have to replace (I realize everything might need replacing but I say that to mean something high quality that can take abuse and I can rely on when the zombie horde attacks and its the one tool I can always rely on to do everything). For example, chopping small trees/branches into fire wood, small game hunting, whittling, opening cans, etc. I also don't want to spend too much (read, I'd like major bang for my buck). From what I read, ZT knives seem to be the thing that fits the bill. That being said, how do I decide between ZT knives? There are so many that I dunno what to pick. They all seem the same except some have assisted opening and others don't. I have read the specs on them and they all seem kind of the same. I had the option of purchasing a ZT0560 for $215 (NIB) and now there is a ZT0200 NIB for sale for $100. I am little uncomfortable spending $200 dollars on a knife and I really can't afford to do that.

From the reviews I've read, both knives are great. I honestly didn't want to spend $200 bucks and $100 seems like a better price but I don't know how much better the 560 is to justify doubling the price. I just want something that will stay sharp and do every demanding thing I will ask from it. Also, the 200 is not S30v but rather CPM (I think) and I was under the impression besides the difficulty of sharpening it S30v might be better for survival. Ideally I'd like one with a stonewashed blade but I don't really care all that much if it fits the bill.

I am starting to think that instead of getting a folder knife, a fixed blade might be better for this sort of work but I haven't done any research about those and am not sure how much they cost.

I also thought of just getting an S30V blur but for 20 to 30 dollars more I can get a ZT and if that's truly better and has a thicker blade, etc then it may be worth it to just get a ZT0200.

Anyway, if any of you have other suggestions I am definitely interested. In short, I am looking to see what knife would be best for me, and how can I tell what the main differences are between the ZT knives.

Thanks in advance for any help and thanks for reading my long post.

For fixed blades at would look at Becker knives. There's a big following of them in the Becker subforum.

I'd recommend a small fixed blade instead of a folder. Take a look a the ESSE 4.

Abuse-misuse, or improper use of something. If you can't use a knife without abuse, then maybe you need another tool.

Maybe for you, that would be a hammer

I really like my benchmade adamas for a folder, I take it camping, used it on branches but have not used it for small trees.

Becker, Swamp Rat, Scrap Yard, Busse
All have cult-like following and for good reason. They have saved the day in multiple scenarios including military, hunting, camping, and just about every other place where a knife is useful. First hand accounts are scattered all over bladeforums.

Becker BK14 edc or a BK2 if you want to really abuse a knife for purposes knives are not built for.

Perhaps a small fixed blade and a Swiss Army Knife would serve you best--the thing about a SAK is that the tool blade options that will spare your edge a lot of abuse. I'd recommend choosing a Becker or ESEE fixed blade and a Victorinox in whichever size/configuration you like the most. All of good quality that won't cost you a small fortune...

Your options are wide open, brother.

First, welcome to Bladeforums, glad you registered and posted up. Its always nice to have another with us.

Second, your criteria, seems to be a bit scattered, it might help if you refine them down, some. If you are looking for a knife to take camping, get you a Swiss Army Knife, that suits your needs, and a medium to large fixed blade. I'm partial to Beckers, Kabars, and ESEE's. We have the BKT forum, and Kabar forum here, ESEE is found elsewhere.

There are many good models out there that won't wreck you wallet, and will get you started right away.

Now, for an Everyday Carry blade, that you can abuse, you will want to look at a small fixed blade, such as the BK11/14/24, ESEE Izula, or Izula II. They are all tougher than they look, and are legal to carry in most areas, will suit your needs well.

For tough ass folders, you are right in looking at ZT, I own several, and find them to be a very solid knife. Leading the charge, is the 0300 series. Very tough, very heavy, and built like a tank. Mine have taken to the baton, and come out none the worse for wear.

My current carry, is my 561, which, is pretty tough, but more style than the 301.

Anyways, feel free to come see us in the BKT forum.

Based on your anticipated uses, I would also suggest a couple of FBs. A smaller one for EDC like the Izula and something like the ESEE 4 to complete the package when you're hiking or camping. Beckers are also good, I just never liked the feel of them in my hand. ESEE's seem to fit me better.

disclaimer to start - this is for ME. others have different jobs, different needs. i'm a veterinarian in a medium-sized town. my daily needs for a knife are WAY different than someone in, say, construction.
but i do think we're all at least similar for our out-in-the-woods, basic camping knife needs.

so that said, my 'tank' folders i'd depend on out in the woods are my ZTs. The 0551 and the 0350 are what i've got (they are plenty big enough for me, the next sizes up are just a little too big for me to ever really carry around day-to-day. if i need bigger than that i go fixed blade. <<<my usual EDC (hate that trendy term, but it fits) is a totally different knife than my camping/hiking knife. usually a little slicer to open mail, packages, cut string, get splinters out, occasionally cut food, etc. so for that knife i'm usually about a 3" blade, max 3.5", and it's a folder to fit quietly in my pocket.>>>

out in the woods/camping/hunting/hiking, i definitely prefer a fixed blade. i know you're looking at folders, and you're on the right track with the ZT line, but i use a fixed blade outside. if you are going to beat on it, get a fixed blade. less to break.

look at becker (bk2, bk16/17), ESEE (4, 5, lazerstrike), swamprat (ratmandu, R4, R6?) to keep it under $150. there are others, and customs, but those are a pretty good starting point. i've got most of them, and they are all good blades.

either way, welcome! most of us started just like you and have the disease now. it's not "which knife?" anymore, it's "which knife do i pick today?".
it'll happen. i promise :)

ETA - i use smaller fixed blades less than a lot of people. they are great blades (becker bk11/14, swamprat ratmandu, esee3 all fit your price range, and i've had all of them), but i personally tend towards either a folder to go in my pocket or a bigger beefier on my belt/pack when i'm out in the woods. the small fixed blades sort of get lost in the shuffle with me, and i've ended up getting rid of most of mine. but they are also great blades if they fit your need. i just size up one when i'm grabbing a fixed blade. or i size up a lot and grab the BK9.

Asking which blade to buy is like asking which girl to date... Everyone has a different idea. Lots of good names here in this thread and most if not all will serve you very well. If it we're me I just snap up an Izula and beat the piss out of it. they are moderate priced and you have sheath and handle options to suit your needs. Carry locations are about anywhere you like, pocket, neck, belt etc. You can carry a 5 dollar gerber sharpener and sharpen it to death on the move if you want. If you just want a folder then ZT is a great choice to beat on. I have knives that range for 50-1500 but I still carry my izula in a back pocket sheath when the mood strikes me and almost always when I'm hiking. Unless your chopping wood.... it works great for tinder and food prep.

Look at the Cold Steel Voyager or Recon lines, Benchmade Adamas or Contego, Spyderco Superleaf or Tuff, darn near any model ZT.

Seems like a smallish fixed blade is going work best for you, although I have beat the crap of my Spyderco Military and it just begs for more. Since you are somewhat new to the hobby and looking for a good price I'd go with one of the smaller Beckers or ESEEs- tough, good performance and very reasonably priced. Remember, knives are tools. You will never find one knife that can do everything well. It's always good to have a few different blades on hand so you can choose the right tool for the job you are doing. Continue to study the forums, there are a lot of guys here who know their stuff and you can learn a lot.

And ignore condescending replies like this ^^^, they are not constructive or helpful to anyone.

For the kind of stuff youre talking about using it for I would suggest a Fixed blade, the ESEE 4 and Becker suggestions above are great starting points for looking for a strong fxed blade. I'll also throw Condor and Mora knives into the mix. Both offer a good variety of models and are trusted by a great deal of people.

Also, welcome to the forum! Prepare your wallet haha.

The OP mentioned chopping as one of the functions he is looking for, in my opinion that limits it to a fixed blade of at least 4 inches (more like 5+). All the companies listed so far are great (ESEE, Becker, Swamprat, Scrapyard, Ontario). Take the chopping out of it and you can go with the smaller fixed blades like the Izula I & II, ESEE 3, etc... Timberweasel and Moosez45 make good points, a heavy duty medium sized fixed blade and a Swiss Army Knife and you can handle 98% (statistic pulled out of arse) of what the outdoors is going to throw at you. For the Swiss Army, I recommend the Forester, Trekker, Camper, or Farmer, they all have a saw that works quite well.

The main difference between a lot of ZT's are they are either assisted, not assisted, liner lock, frame lock, and the steel difference.

For example:
ZT 0350 - Assisted, s30v, liner lock
ZT 0200 - Non-assisted flipper, 154CM, Liner lock
ZT 0300 - Assisted, s30v, Ti frame lock
ZT 0550 - Non assisted non flipper - s35vn, ti frame lock
ZT 0560 - Non assisted flipper, elmax super steel, ti frame lock

The ZT 0200 is a nice knife, but in my opinion the ZT 0560 is worth that extra money. My ZT 0560 has been through everything and it's amazing. The steel is great, edge retention is amazing, frame lock is solid, bearing action is flawless, easy to sharpen, etc.

However, the ZT 0200 is a tank and would also take anything you throw at it.

If you really want a good set up for your uses, I would suggest:
ZT 0200 - All around hard use folder
Kershaw Skyline - Something nice and good for lighter tasks
Esee 4 - Fixed blade for chopping needs and such
SAK - For the can opener and other tools

It'll cost around $250 for everything but that's about the price of the 0560 and you'll have all of your bases covered.
