ok so looking for some opinions, Looking to buy either a cv peanut or a cv sway back. the peanut is in olive bone (jigged) and the sway back in chestnut bone (also jigged). It is to be a temporary replacement for my damaged trapper till i get it back, then it will be added into the rotation with the trapper.

I really like both knives and would like to buy both now but probably not gonna get that past my wife. So which would you guys buy first and why?

for visual reference

Sorry for the huge photos, all i had were stock.

I will be honest...I do like the olive green bone, while I'm not a fan of Case's chestnut jigged bone, and I wish they made the CV version with other handles too...still my vote goes for the swayback jack :)

That's a good looking Peanut, no doubt about it, but I would go with the Swayback jack.

I'm in the same boat. I can't decide between a $35 peanut red bone and $60 case SBJ chestnut. There is a similar thread in the past history that I found a couple days ago, and the guy ended up getting two peanuts. I think I'm going for the SBJ for the extra handle length and the thicker blade. Not to hijack, still in the same vein as the OP's request, are both knives main blades "pinchable"? Or just one of them, or neither? This is an important factor for some people, thanks. And let us know what you end up getting, Blade crazy

It has been my experience that none of the blades on either knife are pinchable. At least not for me anyway.

I love the peanut, it's a great little knife that has a tendency to surprise it's users of just how useful it is.
Definitely should have at least one nut in the collection.

I was only able to fondle a swayback Jack for a few minutes, great knife. The half stops are nice for this size of knife and the wharncliffe looked to be a great user.
I love the CV, so great choice there.

The swayback jack! Just a great knife, and a little more handle to it than the 'nut. Plus it's just gorgeous, such a unique shape.

I have a peanut, and I consider it too small for my taste.
So, I would go the Sway Back. Also, if like me, you would want a Wharncliff blade to try some day,the SBJ would be a complement to your Trapper.

Another vote for the SBJ. The peanut is effective but not in the same league as the SBJ.

I vote - get a SBJ and a rough rider peanut, that way you can see if you will like the peanut before you empty your wallet on a nice one.

Do not have a peanut, but I have had a chestnut bone cv SBJ since it first came out. There is something about a Bose design that is intrinsically satisfying; chestnut bone is the most beautiful scale case puts out (purely a personal esthetic); the cv steel is very sharp and easy to keep sharp and the quality of the Case Bose production knives is a cut above their other prouct which is good to begin with. Can cut up an apple & still fit in your watch or shirt pocket and I have never seen anything but enthusiastic posts for them.

It is already a classic; so with no disrespect for the peanut I would unhesitatingly recomment the cv SBJ.

WOW over whelming support for the sbj. I don't yet own a peanut or a sbj but i want both. I think i will end up with the chestnut sway back jack and put the peanut on the back burner. I make that decision only because one i love the idea, look, and blade of the sbj and two because I own a pocket hunter which is of a similar league with the nut.

Thanks guys I was surprised by there not being a single vote for the little guy (since there is definitely a following for them on here) but happy to see so much love for the sway back. Any way Ill probably order it Friday and post on here when i get it. Thanks for the feedback and God Bless

I'll vote for it, but chances are - you'll just end up having a SBJ, Peanut, Mini Copperhead, stockman, canoe, trapper, mini trapper, pen etc. I think that most people would just prefer the handle length of the SBJ compared to the peanut, although, I personally prefer the peanut.

Based entirely on those pictures, I would choose the peanut. I'm not a fan of wharncliffe blades, the 'swayback' design doesn't talk to me, and the peanut has prettier bone.

Do you need a third choice? Not in CV, but I love this new handle material, "BARNBOARD DARK MOLASSES JIGGED BONE."

I can certainly hope my collection will grow in such a way! but actually while I plan on buying the sbj and nut myself, the other patterns I want are a GEC Barlow as well as a GEC Whaler. But those are on a birthday list (although i don't know if i will get them but hopefully at least one of them)

My collection is small (new to the traditional thing but loving it now that I'm here) and growing slowly but I will continue to enjoy the many patterns and styles as I go. I figure the longer pause between purchase gives me more time to enjoy and learn the knife. (traditionals really do each have their own personality)

wow that's a mouthful, but a good looking knife. I tend to favor the patterns with blades on the same side (an odd aesthetic thing for me) I do like the scales on that though ill have to look for some.

If it was a CV Peanut I would vote for it.But,since I don't believe it is,I'll go SBJ.
