Received my SAR 5 in the mail today, thanks to a proxy who wishes to remain anonymous!;) Overall, I really like this knife, nice ergos and the blade just screams "camp knife". Jerry was right in that it feels like holding a claw hammer, the handle scales are thick! This knife would be perfect for those who like the feel of magnum thickness scales. For myself though, I plan on removing them to sand and thin them down, or maybe put some sort of paracord wrap on it. IMO, as it stands, the stock scales make the knife too handle heavy. Other than that, this is exactly what I have been hoping for from Busse for a long time!

Congrats!

Handle heavy......You ain't Freaking kidding bro! My hand about hit the table when I picked up the one gimmejr scored in Oregon. Darn green blade looks like a tooth pick sandwiched in between those huge slabs.

But I have to agree....it would make a nice little camp knife.

I have been mesmerized by my Green + Orange/Black G-10 one over the past few days. I also have a Black + Black Canvas Micarta one. I think that it was a well-executed design, both in terms of the blade itself and its handles.

i would've bought one if it didn't have the talon hole at the choil.....

likely never break a busse, but stilll....

Are you worried about the strength of the knife?

I won't get to hold one until tomorrow but it looks like the steel at the talon hole is thick enough that there wouldn't be a big stress riser.

At least it doesn't look any worse than the first handle hole and I've never heard of a Busse failing at a handle hole so I doubt it would cause any meaningful reduction in strength.

The tan/grey SARs are sweet. I wish I could have grabbed one but I guess I'll have to wait for one to come up on the exchange.

Would you mind taking an in hand pic?

nice score. I really should have gotten a proxy. I can't decide if I like the green finish with the orange handles, or the grey with the natural micarta.

If you get too woozy, I can help lunde. LOL

Wishin Miss Amy would get better and confirm my treasure-trove of SAR5's.

Sorry for being a few days late, but here's a pic of the knife in hand...

As everyone can see, I removed the scales as they just weren't doing it for me. For the past few days I've been experimenting with a few different types of wraps. What's on there now is just a simple paracord wrap that is temporary. Before this I used hockey stick grip tape to get an idea of the shape I wanted. I took it off though as it was just plain ugly (all be it, very functional). In a few day's I'm going to make a more permanent wrap with epoxy soaked paracord. A single layer of 1/8" 550 paracord feels a bit too narrow in hand, so on my final attempt I will create a palm swell by doing a two layered wrap. The first layer will be paracord with its innards taken out in the center part of the handle, followed by another layer like the one thats on there now. I also ordered some 3/16" paracord to see if the extra thickness feels better.

Anyhow, the knife feels completely different now! The balance point is right at the top of the wrap, just beneath the talon hole. Also, the added thickness added to the spine and underside (in combination with a palm swell) seems to solve the problem of your hand wanting to slide forward if you need to stab into something hard.

El_Toro, great pics! I'd love to see how that SAR 5 looks without any handles/cord wrapping at all...

yo toro, when you do the final wrap are you going to treat it with epoxy/superglue/bong resin or just leave the cord as is?

just wanted to cover all my bases! :D now hurry up and finish the project!

not yet. Jerry said that SAR5s along with the big sarsqatches will be avalable exclusively at the bcs(bussecompanystore.com) I hope they arrive soon:D
