Look what I found hiding inside an Opinel #7

I liked the Opinel #7 when I got it last week, but I could not resist doing some customizations.

Here is what I did.
* Carved the handle to a rough shape with a Benchamde 705
* Sanded the handle with a Dremel tool
* Rubbed olive oil into the freshly sanded wood
* Ground the blade into a slightly different shape with a Sharpmaker 204, then sharpened.
* Gently rubbed the sides of the blade with the smooth Sharpmaker rods.
It took about 2 hours total work.

Let me know what you think.

Excellent work Chris. That is a very unique way of bringing out the hidden character in a knife. Congrats!!

Nice job. I have a #6 that is very similar. It still needs the handle finished, when I make up my mind just what I want to do with it.

Nice work! Opinels are definately fun to modify, and cheap enough to not worry too much about messing up!

Somebody needs to tac one up. Blackened blade , wood and hardware. That would be cool. If ya like that crap :)

The Opinel has a great following in Europe and there are actually carving get-togethers where whittlers gather to shape their opinels...some using only an opinel to do it....

Is that cannibalism?

:D :p

"Here's a link to some great customized opinels"

Dan, those are some amazing photos. Thanks for sharing that link. As the others have mentioned, I'd love to pick up a couple of Opinels now and have at 'em! My father in-law's no TV repairman but he does have a 'bitchin' set of tools!' ala Jeff Spicoli's dad.

Hmm, how should one go around blacking one out? The handle is easy, but the blade...
Oh well, I'll buy one first
