Hmm, how should one go around blacking one out? The handle is easy, but the blade...
Oh well, I'll buy one first

Get a bottle of cold blue for guns. It will darken up the carbon blade nicely.
Or, you can just build up a good patina on it. You can do this with an apple or an onion. Just make a slice an let the blade dry....then take another slice.

#6...2 3/4"
#7...3"
#8...3 1/4"

Anything under #6 is non-locking. I believe (not 100% sure) that each size up is a 1/4" increase in blade length.
