Look What is About to Get All Jungly

Nice 16, Doc. You really got the hang of that Fisking business.

.am very happy you intend to come down for the fall gathering.....Yay!!!!!!!!....

ethan

Any ETA on that yet? My October is already 3/4 full, and I'm wondering if I can make it this year.

What exactly is fisking?

Looks good whatever it is haha

It's sort of related to cliching. It's definitely different from flexxxing though. :D

Jerry Fisk, national treasure and designer of the BK-5, gave a grinder demo at Ethan's on convexing and sharpening edges. This technique has become known as "Fisking" a Becker.

I don't think I'm allowed by Bladeforums rules to say what I'm doing down there because they might consider it promotion etc. Also, the people I am going with had this crazy specific (40 page) contract so I'm afraid to even say the name of what I'm doing. It is medically related but I won't be doing anything medical. I'll be hacking through jungle for a few weeks.

I'm planning on bringing my wife Gretchen to the fall gathering but with reservations. You see, once people meet her, they want nothing to do with me anymore. :)

Gretchen would have a blast!
and she is awesome!
have fun in the jungle and stay safe -- and the 16 has chased my Esee4 out of the carry rotation, so I totally understand.

Hey Iowa, my wife Bob and I just got back from Manaus. We camped with the CIGS training group for the military there. We tested one of my new patterns for what I call a small game knife but I wanted to see how it worked for them in usage. They already use one of my designs so they were anxious to see how this one did. I like it down there. Iowa, have fun down there. See you at Ethans next year.
By the way y'all I was not plugging for business.

Are you bringing your lawnmower parang! That thing rocks! (I tested it in Peru, thanks man)

I've been using my BK-16 in the jungle a bit too and it is exceeding my expectations. Now with a kydex sheath it should be near perfection (just ordered one from Azwelke).

I gotta throw down another thing I love about the BK-16: it's so light. That makes it great for travel. I don't have a scale or anything but before I go on a trip I might break out a bunch of my knives and compare, and this time it was the BK-16 for the win (and because it was asking for punishment ;)). I am always looking to save weight because I tend to have lots of other gear (I sometime travel with a folding kayak).

Have fun out there!

Well, I won't ask you about the project, so you don't get in trouble. But I will ask what you're taking beside the FFG (and Fisked) BK-16. Are you taking a machete, or planning on buying one down there? Folding knife, pack, etc. ? Stay safe...

I'm bringing my lawnmower blade parang. It did well down there in May. I might also bring a small multitool like a Juice 2 or maybe my Swiss Tool.

Sounds like fun! I'd love to go to Manaus. Hope to see you at Ethan's.

Will do! A folding kayak sounds awesome. That would work great in Canada doing some backcountry fishing.

Oh, thanks for the help. One concern of mine is, damn he is grinding hard on that thing! I cant believe the heat treats not ruined/ his fingers got hot. Sometimes one quick pass on my grinder is enough to burn a tip right off.

Exactly, I've said it a bunch of times that you wont ruin a knife's heat treat so easily, the knife industry would be suffering if any amount of heat causes the blades HT to mess up :). You can mold kydex on a knife and it does not ruin the HT.

What kinda (grit) belt were you using?

I've been releasing stuff in dribs and drabs on video. I didn't feel like doing another 'trip report' video series, but instead I've been focusing more on specific skills based videos, because that is what I focused on down there this time. I have put out a few photos, but not a big batch. Most of them are headed for publication in one form or another so I can't really post them everywhere. I really like the 'trip report' format for videos but I don't like to chew the cud twice. I've got several different trips in the works which would be very good for series - Sudan, Malawi and Libya are all very realistic possibilities later this year - but I've done the R.A.T. Amazon trip report. This particular trip to the Amazon is already being filmed and I'm locked into such a crazy contract that I can't really talk about anything. If you PM me I can give you details as well as friend you on facebook so you can follow it.

I'll talk to you about it at the fall gathering. Sure you will have pics and fun stuff there to share. ;)

Oh and definitely bring those forged machetes you made, really want to get a look at those bad boys.

I'm bringing my personal jungle parang for sure. I'm gonna try to bring a couple more for people to play with/give away. Waiting for the weather to cool down a bit before I start forging again.

Trizact belt, lower grit belt, forget the number! But the tip would turn black and crumble away. even after a second on the belt. Granted this only happenes on small knives, like a leek where theres damn near no metal there, but still im paranoid!

Is the belt worn out? Fresh belts are the way to go, no point being stingy with you sanding belts, just gonna create problems.

What do you consider a "quick pass"? Like 2 seconds or 2 minutes?

ABout 2 seconds. It may actually be wearing out, ive used it for a while but it still cuts ok. That might be the problem. Although it still feels the same as when I bought it, its a very odd texture, like tiny pyramids. THanks for the help, guess I gotta save a few bucks and replace them!

YES!

The BK-16 is now almost fully jungle-ized thanks to the addition of some scales from K9-Handler. Now if I just had some stainless steel screws/nuts ...

That knife looks wicked sharp. I hear I've got to investigate this fisk method for my BK5.

Sounds like a great trip. It's about that time of summer when I get the urge to travel. Never been to any part of the Amazon before. Hmm.....

Are those orange scales? Sweet!!! I want some...
