I have so been wanting to get a variable speed reversible disc sander, but I did not want to blow $750 to $850 for an already made one. So here is the list of parts so far.

$177.00 Surplus Teco Westinghouse FM50 201 220 1ph in, 230 3ph out VFD from dealers electric. Oh, it has a NEMA 4 rated enclosure so if I REALLY wanted to, I could hose 'er down when it gets dusty!!

$75.00 9" disc from Beaumont Metal Works.

$99.00 3/4hp 230v 3ph 1725rpm motor from Grizzly.

$50 (+ or -, not purchased yet) for steel sheet for base and worktable from online metals. I am going with mild steel cause its cheaper than aluminum. I will give all parts a nice coat of epoxy paint after I size everything up. An adjustable sharpening worktable is in the gameplan too.

let us know how that set-up works out !! 177.00 is a great deal on a VFD...

What are you going to do for a table/workrest?

I would like to construct one of these as well for profiling blades and such.

Sweet deal on the sander. It would be great for doing single bevel blades. I'm going to take some more step by step pictures of how I make them if you are interested when you get it up and running. I ground the one i put corion handles on in about 5 hours or so. I made my belt sander with help from my friend who has a machine shop. you can see pictures of it here. http://sitebuilder.verizon.net/trellix/sitebuilder/f_edit_page.html IF anyone wants plans, I would be glad to draw some up.

for the worktable I am going to use 1/8" hot roll steel plate, with a pair of 1/4x1/2 rails underneath, attached by a couple 4/40 socket heads in a milled slot for fine distance adjustment to the disc. Gonna use a pair of 3/4" square barstock bulkheads on the front of the machine base to attach the legs to for the worktable, and the legs are also hopefully gonna have milled slots for anything besides 90deg. I am also going to make individual 2" worktables for sharpening, also adjustable for angle. Then again too, everyting I have done so far has been 25deg, so I might just make it static. The table and legs are going to be attached to the bulkheads by a pair of 1/4" bolts with hand knobs. I figure 2 bolts to remove the whole table assembly is not too bad for paper changes. Then again too, I might change my mind mid build and do something completely different.

can you post a link to the VFD, I looked and couldn't find it. thanks...
