So, I was out of town last week, and found a little shop in southern NC with a sign that read "Knife Outlet." I couldn't resist, and went in to have a look around, and I stumbled on something beautiful.

I haven't seen a Becker blank before (but I've seen plenty of Camillus Cold Steel blanks). I'm pretty sure this is a Camillus BK7 blank, because it seems just a tad thicker than my KaBar BK7. I'm kicking around ideas right now, thinking about possible grinds and whatnot. I'm pretty excited about the possibilities.

That said, I am open to suggestions, because many of you are smarter than I am...

Man that's really really neat!
I can't wait to see what you end up doing with it!
Keep us posted!

I have a few just like if from the Camillus Auctions . It looks unground so its NOT heat treated
you can do what you like with it,it will be easy to grind on but will need heat treat before use.

What town in eastern NC? I'd love to go poke around there (I'm in Raleigh).

Great find!

Great find!

It was south of Franklin, in Otto, NC, heading toward Dillard and Clayton, GA. They specialize in knife handle materials (and they have some pretty amazing stuff in that department), but they have some other stuff, too, which is where I found this blank. Their site is www.knifehandles.com.

It is unground, and that is what I suspected about the heat treat. Thank you for confirming it, because I wasn't certain.

That is an awesome find! Do a full height convex on it and show and tell! My Kabar BK7 is quite a beast and one of my faves! So this one should do you good!

Heheh. Thanks for the lead! Looks like I have a Becker blank on the way! Once I get it, I'll post pics in a new thread. Great find, willoworship!

Sweet! Is it a BK7, or one of the others?

BK9, unless they send the wrong one! I was tempted to get the 9 and 7, but it's most likely better for my wallet to just get the 9. Besides, I've been really wanting a BK9 for a while, but haven't gotten around to buying one.

Great find! I lived in Franklin for a while. I miss that area.

I'd go over to the Camillus Collector's forum, and ask them; also, you might PM Phil Gibbs too. I have a bunch of blanks from Camillus, and some have tang stamps, others have the grid marks from going through the ovens, others don't have anything. A while back, someone here on BF posted that there are some indicators as to whether a blanks has been heat-treated or not; Phil or someone in the Camillus Collector's forum could probably advise on that.

. . . went down there and bought the last four blanks?! :grumpy: You have to share, dang it! Ante up!

:p Just kidding. I'm going to order some slabs for my blanks and I talked to Christy there about some specifics on handle material; when I asked about how many blanks they still had, she mentioned that somebody bought the last four blanks yesterday.

Please post up results, and maybe even a WIP sequence too. I have several old Western & Remington blanks to grind out, and I'd like to see how a convex would work.

thx - cpr

Whew! Looks like I contacted them in the nick of time to get the 9! I'm pretty sure the one I'm getting just needs an edge put on it and some handles. Until I can afford an appropriate belt sander, I think I'm gonna hold off on grinding knives. I've ground 3, with 3 unground blanks to go, and they took forever with what I've been using!

Oh, isn't there the "file test" that could be used to check for heat treating? You know, if the file skates/slides across the steel without biting, it has been heat treated?

Looks like you bought the last Black BK9 Blank if its ground and coated chances are its heat treated and was tossed out for some reason before finishing. the ones that are ground and not coated my not be heat treated .with all of the blanks its a test and see.
The last 4 (2 machetes a BK7 and BK9) are on the way to me .
doubt ill make anything with them I just like Becker stuff.

Really?! I guess being the engineering type, I just can't leave things alone. If I had all the blanks you're getting, I wouldn't be able to leave them in their current state! Oh well. If that's what you like, great! To each their own!

Good grab - but I don't think I could let those sit. I'd have to do something with them. I'm settling on a BK7 with a full convex grind, as my all-around camp/beater/B.O.B. knife. My flat-saber-ground Camillus BK7 is an amazing tool; a full convex grind & edge on one would be nigh indestructible, I think.

I have one of the Camillus large O.V.B. Bowie blade blanks, fully ground, in need of a handle and an edge. I like taking it down and sitting out in the yard with a cold gin & Sprite a playing with it. I'm like you - I just like having these old Camillus blanks.

Yes I will do something if they are heat treated I have a dozen Beckers I have modified for my own pleasure, handles, blade mods, finishes, sheaths, etc but if they are not heat treated by the time you heat treat them easier to buy a used knife and play with it. from what I saw all 4 that I bought were not heat treated, maybe the BK7. I have to wait and see. These are a little piece of history so ill keep them as is for now.

I see.

Well, I got my blank today! I just need to put an edge on it and make some handles, then it will be good to go! I'll start a new thread and post a picture of the blank later.
