Lookee what I found!

Really?! I guess being the engineering type, I just can't leave things alone. If I had all the blanks you're getting, I wouldn't be able to leave them in their current state! Oh well. If that's what you like, great! To each their own!

I agree totally. While it's a cool piece of memorabilia, it was meant to be a blade, and meant to be used. I intend to try and make that happen!

yes but if they arnt heat treated I wont spend the money to do it I would rather spend my time on a USED knife and modify something I can use.
working on a blank not heat treated is not cost efficient for me.

that was the black BK9 ? was it heat treated

I haven't done anything to check, but it would make no sense at all to be coated without being heat treated. Heat treating could not be done after coating (it would burn off the coating and make a mess), so unless they decided to coat this one without a heat treat, I assume it's heat treated. I'll see if I can find my Leatherman and test it with the file on that.

Found the file and checked. Skates across the steel! Therefore, heat treated!

i keep being tempted to locate some of these...

but i can't seem to be motivated enough. heh :)

though i find me an old old one, look out... whoosh. there i go.

good finds...

Good luck! A while back there were several BK2 blanks on ebay, but since then, I've had a really hard time finding any Becker blanks. So again, good luck!

I did buy one of those BK2s on ebay It was NOT heat treated so I use it as a template to make my Handle slabs. was not cheap either .

I have a question on the Camillus heat-treat process: did they heat-treat after the blades were ground, or before? I read somewhere that if you grind before heat-treating, the blade might warp.

Also, survivaledge, what's the thickness of the BK9? If it's a 1/4", I may look around for one, but if it's 3/16", I won't bother. My BK7 is 3/16".

thx - cpr

The Camillus BK9 is .210 to .215 thick the Ka Bar is .188 quite a bit different.

My Camillus blanks appear to be heat treated before grinding although the blanks I have that are ground but not coated are a little soft and may have failed heat treat so not used. and those not ground are also soft either not heat treated or bad shape or just never used before the company closed..
Those that are coated got through heat treat and coating and for various reasons were failed on inspection. could be soft or bad shape or a flaw lots of reasons I guess.

It was south of Franklin, in Otto, NC, heading toward Dillard and Clayton, GA. They specialize in knife handle materials (and they have some pretty amazing stuff in that department), but they have some other stuff, too, which is where I found this blank. Their site is www.knifehandles.com.

Culpepper & Co.
8285 Georgia Road - Otto, NC 28763

Well... what do you know. I never knew this place existed, so I did a google maps search and it says, from my house:

Driving directions to 8285 Georgia Rd, Smithbridge, NC 28763
21.4 mi – about 27 mins

Looks like I should swing by on my next day off and see what's going on.
