Lookie! New Scandi knives!!

Wow! Another line to add to my collection. THANKS for pointing this out, they do look very similiar to Kellam's line.... but at a much reduced price. I think Ragnar is going to get more of my Rent money again this month! :)

Eagerly awaited, rapidly delivered, my package from Ragnar arrived. I have my new "Hackman butterfly"! :)

Putting the new one next to the old, I could see immediately that these are as close as two models from the same company. If they weren't stamped with a different name, I'd have thought the new one WAS an original Hackman.

You could use the parts interchangeably, they are so identically sized and shaped. Both handles have the same 3-dimensional palm swells. Lock-up on both is perfect.

There are two exceptions.

The new handle feels like a hard rubber, rather than the hard plastic of the original.

The blade is now 2 mm thick instead of the origninal 3 mm. It is also highly polished and just as perfectly ground as the original.

Because the handle is the same size, including the slot for the tang, there is an elongated washer on each side of the blade, connecting the pivot pins on that side.

I will update you with any further information after I use it to prepare my next home-cooked meal. Meanwhile, this is a great lightweight, inexpensive, utility folder and I want a couple more. :D

I also just got my Ahti Butterfly... it's... well it's not all that great. The handles themselves feel okay, but their connection to the blade is kinda suspect. Wiggles around a little.... still not sure, but it doesn't feel very strong.

The "detent" is simply a plastic block into which the blade bites (hard) when you squeeze the blade closed. I expect problems with the edge in that area (the edge is very thin), but there is a cosmetic flaw on the flats of the blade in that area.

---obviously it won't flip very well, there's a "snap" at both extremes of the handle's range of movement which temporarily "lock" the handle in that position. I like it, but it's more a light-duty utility knife than anything else. It's also out of stock :D

However.. I'm much more impressed with the Normark-92 serrated folder I got for 10 bucks... it's sweet. Hard plastic, attractively textured handles (especially in the area where your fingers curl around it) with thick brass liners with a seriously heavy-duty lockback. I likes. A lot. Note: beware, as it opens and closes forcefully, always close with two hands and control the blade the whole time.

I really like Ragnar's rapid shipment. I think I'll definitely order from him again.

Handles on the originals are nylon and will cold-form after a while, loosening the lock-up. Sorta semi-hard.

I love the looks of those little Vikings. I'm also a huge fan of the Troll by Brusletto. Matter of fact, I just got in three Lauri blades that I'm putting handles on, and I'm looking real hard at those two for an idea of what I want my knife to be when I'm done.

Matter of fact if you look here:

You might see a modicum of influence from the Viking in my first barbaric creation that I call a knife...:p

Very cool looking ones! OOh! and the Jarvenpaa with the Birch Bark handle is really nice too! and....and....aww....heck...I want 'em all....

Just got my order from Ragnars in. I've been scratching my head for an hour and a half now trying to figure out how I should feel.

The pragmatist within me is looking at the Flutterbys grunting and nodding in satisfaction. I just got a couple of well ground razor sharp, secure locking blades for $36.00. Awesome to throw in a backpack or take out to work this summer.

The knife geek within is whining, screaming, and stamping his feet. They're loose, the handles are slicker 'n snot on a marble, and even basic windmill openings are a challenge. Check out the little black foam pieces in the handle slots to keep it from rattling and help it close tightly.....NICE!!! *L*

The Tinkergnome within is giggling gleefully. "Ooh! slick handles! I can rough file them! ooh! oooh! even better! stipling! no! wait! I can make a new set of handles out of Walnut! I can figure out how to put some brass pins in there!"

As far as comparing it to the Original Hackmann...I dunno...I haven't had mine since the early nineties, But I could swear it had a bit more weight, swung alot more smoothly, and had grippier handles.

Overall, I'm really glad I got in on my two, but I'm glad I didnt' go too haywire this time and buy a dozen of them.

Further adding to my mixed emotions....My son decided he wants to make a knife, so...I ordered him up a little Eriksson blade for $6.00 or so. Evidently I didn't explain my order clearly enough...Ragnar sent me the entire knife, Birch handle, plastic sheath, etc.:D Same blade....same price...just already done. I thought about taking the handle off it and telling the boy to start over again, but...right now I'm thinking about letting him refinish the handle and make a leather sheath for it. If he does well with that, I'll make him up a file blade, or sacrifice one of my Lauris to him.

With the new blade 2 mm thick compared to the old at 3 mm, there should be a noticeable weight loss.

A balisong that's been used a bit will swing more smoothly. But I don't see these as made for flipping. Not without a lot of work on the pivot area, or you will get a lot more wobble.

Maybe I've just got stickier fingers than you do, but my Ahti isn't slippery. :)

I just looked at my Hackman again, this time with a magnifying glass on the logo. Across the center, it says "Hackman Finland". On a curve above that it says "Stainless". On a curve below that it says "Sorsakoski".

And who manufactures the new Ahti butterfly? Proudly marked on each handle, "Sorsakoski Finland".

Ha! that's freakin' cool!

I'm already warming up to mine after flipping it around a bit, and giving my extreme taco salad preparation test. Them things is some t'mater slicin' SOBS!!:D

I would have loved these things back when I was working EMS and Security. sharp enough to work, cheap enough to lose, and fun enough to pass alot of boring hours.

Granted, they aint made to be flippers, but I still can't resist...:D

Since you ask, Pertemet Oy is the probable maker. They have made "Hackmann" butterfly varients recently.

Kellam knives are made in North Eastern Finland "Kainuun Puukko" and they have actually adopted Ostrobothnian (West coast of Finland) style, that's why they look so alike.

http://www.kainuunpuukko.com/

Kauhava, where the Ahti puukkos come has LONG traditions of puukko making... Iisakki Järvenpää being one of the oldest still running, but Kauhavan Puukkopaja and Altti Kankaanpää are pretty good ones also.

The link is all in Finnish, sorry...

Personally, I like the Lapland puukkos the best. Northern Finland has always have their own original style of puukkos and leukus... and I guess it's the materials they are using also... curly birch and reindeer antler ( renewable natural sources since reindeer drop their antler every year! :D )

Some Lapland puukkos here...

Thanks, and welcome to the forums!

I'm becoming a bit more of a fan of the Lapland style Puukko myself, just a bit more versatile it seems.

Just ten minutes ago picked one up from J. Arthur Loose http://www.jloose.com/index.html?folio2.html~main here in America. 18cm Damascus blade, Ambonya Burl handle, and flat ground. I think I'm liking it real well. Not sure about the Ricasso on it though. Very big and beefy...unquestionably the stoutest Puukko I've ever seen, have yet to see how well it cuts though... (Yes, definitely "Americanized" to some degree with the flat grind and the ricasso, but I think it came together really well)

Maybe I can get some pics this evening...:D For temporary reference, mine is very much like the Ambonya and Damascus hunter at the bottom of this page: http://www.jloose.com/index.html?folio2.html~main Although an earlier version, minus the engraving on the handle.
