Looking a general purpouse folder

Thanks guys, I'll look them. That Spyderco Tenacious looks very nice, its real Spidy knife, even its made in China like Byrd line itseems but many like it and say its true value Spyderco. Looks really strong candidate for me now. Both Buck's look great too, I'll be sure to add them to my collection in some point ^^

Since frost is in your equation, which means moisture, you might want to take a good look at the Sypderco Salt series with H1 steel. Absolutely will not rust. Probably the most "care" free knife there is. Just sharpen it and rinse it off when it gets nasty.

I would recommend a Benchmade Vex. It´s absolutely fantastic! G10 handles and blade coating that will prevent it from rust. It´s quite cheap to.

Check it out here!

(you´re from Finland... right?)

I don't think any lock will have troubles in cold weather. However you will probably be wearing gloves, and this makes some locks easier to use than others.

I would imagine that Axis/Liner/Framelocks could be a bit tricky with gloves on. I think the easiest would be a Lockback or a Hawk-lock, which brings me to my next point, the Kershaw RAM. Awesome knife, check it out.

Any of the Salts will do well (Pacific, Salt I, Atlantic), the Endura's or Delica's will do well. Other then that Maybe the Paramilitary (out of your price range though) or a Tenacious

I'm not sure how the Axis or BBL would handle freezing. I should probably try it with my Manix 2 and 520.

salt would indeed be great I would reccomend the pacific salt! or a bm griptillian!!! but any spyderco , kershaw, or benchmade would probably serve you well!!! and despite general opinion some of sogs higher end stuff is good too!!!

So many knives, so little money... I'll definately check salt's too, (I think 3 or more peoples have already recomended pacific salts so it cannot be bad knife ) since they are recomended quite often. Spyderco Tenacious I get locally bit over priced as its 60 €'s ($75+) but that is expected in here, land of the taxes and middle-men...

Don't be fooled, the build quality/initial setup on my Tenacious is at least as good to some of my *ahem* far more expensive spyderco's. I carry my tenacious every day. Steel holds a decent edge, blade is dead center, liner lock is VERY robust. It is a knife that will treat you well, despite being made in China.

If you care about where it's made, check out the Buck Vantage Pro.

Save up another 16 bucks and order a Spyderco Manix 2.

Probably best value for the money out there right now. (Or close anyway.)

I don't mind weather its made in china, usa, germany, switzerland aslong its good blade. Manix 2 looks good but its unavailable in my country.

So far I got two cadidates to buy next month:

Spyderco Tenacious
Spyderco Dragonfly

I like Dragonfly's small size and lock back mechanism but I also like G10 handles of Tenacious. Tenacious blade is good 2cm's longer. I am looking quite small knife so Tenacious might be bit... too big for my current needs. Dragonfly's size and plain edge version seems to be what I am looking, even Lock back you cannot close it with one hand.

Its tough choice. But I think I get Dragon Fly next month and maybe Tenacious in December. I'll keep Manix 2 in positions if I get good deal from the states.

But my next folder will be a Spyderco, real genuine spyderco (where it was made doesn't matter as long its Spyderco )

Sounds like the new Spyderco Persistence is exactly what you want (mini-Tenacious)

Sounds good. I got 45€ deal from Spyderco Tenacious including shipping and handeling. Not bad from real deal brand new spyderco. I bought that and I expect to get that knife in next week. I'll check also Spyderco Persistence

Warning: The following post may upset some! :p

You know, I got curious about that too. So I put my BM710 in the freezer and let it stay there overnight at about -20 Celsius (-4 Fahrenheit). No problem in the morning, frosty knife but opened and functioned smoothly. Cleanup and light oil after it was room temperature again.

Next step, get more radical. I got the lock and pivot area wet under the faucet and put the knife back in the freezer, now at -25 C /-13 F. Sure enough, after a few hours it was frozen shut, as one might expect. Blade or lock didn't move at all. Knife goes into my front pocket and after a couple of minutes it was thawed enough to operate smoothly. No problem again.

So there you have it. This wasn't in the least bit scientific but it was interesting to try out. Josh, you wanna give the ball bearing lock a go? :D

I tried it yesterday with my Manix 2 and BM 520. They both worked after freezing, I haven't tried it with water though. I can imagine putting it in your pocket to melt out might be a little wet. :p

Comment: The 520's aluminum handles took much longer to warm up then the G-10 ones on the Manix 2. Really unusable without gloves if it's frozen, as my hands were getting far too cold to use the knife for extended periods.

For folders I'll go with everyone else on the brands and models. Especially the Spyderco Manix II, if you would go up ~$12.

However, you SHOULD consider a fixed blade for your requirements. Take a look at the RAT Cutlery Izula, small enough that it won't feel like a hunk of junk, lighter than most folders, much stronger and you won't have lock problems in the snow.

Nah, no wet pocket, a thin layer of ice on the operating surfaces didn't turn into anything drippy. True about the G-10, it didn't really feel uncomfortable while the metal bits were quite cold.

Sorry you said folder.

Hope you are happy with what you get - I have a Spyderco Endura which is very nice - light and not bulky.

I also have the benchmade griptillilian which I like less, as the handle is thicker, but many people in cold climates seem to like a lot. It also can be opened and shut one handed with ease.

Have fun

Keep a nice thick petroleum based oil on all moving components when working in that cold of a climate, and you should have no worries about it freezing shut. Petroleum does not freeze, and it will resist water... When you are done, just give it a good cleaning and re-lube with a thinner oil...
