8Cr13MoV? I know these are both lower end blade steels and knowing this knife is going to be a beater, is it really going to matter all that much? I just don't have any experience with AUS6a steel! TIA
NO, it won't matter much the difference between the 2 steels. AUS 6 & 8 are good steels. They are good stainless, holding a decent edge. The grind and heat treat matters much. If you like the shape, handle and mfg. then get it. DM
I have an old SOG NW Ranger fixed blade in AUS6. Never really had much of a problem with the steel, more the design of the knife for the tasks at hand.
Just because they are considered 'lower end' today doesn't mean they're not any good.
Where are you getting Aus6? That is not common much anymore. Did you mean Aus8? Cuz 8cr and Aus8 aren't that different but the heat treat is important. What companies are we talking about?
Aus6 will have slightly less edge retention than Aus8 (8cr) but it will be more rust resistant. It will be easier to sharpen. I am not familiar with how Kershaw does AUS6 but they are a solid company. Seems like it could be a good knife.
