Looking at a new spyderco-help deciding

So I have a used Southard on the way, but I would like to have a more tradional style non-flipper Spyderco for edc. I tend to gravitate to lager knives without an extreme point: I break them. I tend not to care for back locks as I like and need easy one hand open and close knives. I do not like slippery knives or serrations.

I am a newbie to Spyderco and to different steels. A couple of my favorites so you have an idea of what I tend to like have been the Benchmade Rift (love the lock and blade shape, hate the deep "choil" where stuff likes to hang up). My ZT 0562, but still a little thick for good slicing.

So where do I start? I am really not familiar with the offerings, and would like to check them out.

Thanks for the help

I would say check out the the Manix line. CBB lock is very similar to the Axis Lock which you find on the Benchmade Rift. Pretty strong and on the bigger side of size in comparison to a lot of knives out there. Lot's of different steels and scales configurations to choose from. Probably worth checking out in terms of your criteria.

I second this suggestion the manix line is a really stout and well made knife from spyderco also some of my favorites.

+1 for manix. I would also add the tenacious. not too pointy, liner lock, lots of customization options available as well if that matters. One of the best selling spydercos and pretty cheap as well.

Thanks, I will check these out. A particular steel that is interesting? they get wet and used around manure

The Delica is probably my favorite Spyderco and very slicey. I know you said no backlocks, but I can easily close it with one hand.

If you like larger than that, the Stretch or Endura might fit you better.

There's a Knife Center exclusive Manix 2 out right now that's running carbon fiber scales with a CruWear blade. It even has a decent price to boot. I ordered one and it should be here tomorrow. I've read only good things about it since it's been released.

I can let you know what I personally think about it when it pops in.

Yeah based on your description I would say the manix is your best choice

that stretch was one that I was curious about. The Gayle Bradley was another.

What would anyone say was THE Spyderco. The one that if you only owned one, it would be that one? Or the one that sums up all that the company is about?

I think THE Spyderco is the paramilitary 2. That being said, it has a relatively delicate tip. For me at the moment, I only have a pm2 and a stretch. The pm2 is with me every single day.

If you're worried about tip strength, the gayle Bradley or the manix are better choices.

PM2 is your Huckleberry.

Military comes next.

Almost like heroin, sitting around opening and closing a slick PM2 with one hand.

PM2, Millie, Manix. Not in any order. I was surprised by the size of my first Manix 2 I got last week; a second one (translucent blue Bd1) is already on the way.

Spydie steels loved by users and to look out for? Not in any order: Cru Wear, maxamet, s110v, s90v, 440v, 204p, m4, 52100, HAP40, zdp-189, and the list goes on. It's hard to go wrong. Plenty of Spydie lovers happily use s30v and vg-10.

Careful buying Spydies...it's extremely addictive.

Yes I was gong to say the Military. The larger knife shown here for size. Probaly don't want this steel M4. I love it but maybe not the best in your work.

I was also going to say that since you don't want a lock back but like easy open / close check out the UK PK the smaller knife in this first photo. Just has a unique detent but no lock. Like a slip joint knife with the spider hole.
Fun and practical to use. The steel would be great for you as well; very stain resistant.

Here is a Manix LW (light weight) (top knife) with the Paramilitary 2 bellow it

Here are a few for size comparison :
Millitary
Gayle Bradley One
Endura 4
UK PK
Origin of edge length lined up here.

Tips are lined up there.

If you can see your way clear to try a lock back give serious consideration to the Endura 4. A good full size knife.. It is one hand friendly = easy to press the lock and the blade drops. Long but not bulky.

Yes many have an acute point. I would say if you break it grind it to your satisfaction or get it ground that way. There are a couple of pros here that would do that for you.
Heck I grind my blades shorter or change the tips all the time.

To be clear I am not offering to do this for you but the other guys will.
