hey at my loocal sears, craftsman is selling a 6x48 inch vertical, or horizontal sander with a 9 inch disk for 460 canadian, it comes with a stand and a vise, is this a useful tool? theres no tax or anytihng,is this a good deal?

I use my 4 X 36 constantly for grinding down steel thickness, cleaning up band saw cuts, and use it a lot on handle material, etc., etc.. I think the 6 inch wide belt is wider than you need. Those wider belts will cost more too but the 48 inches gives more belts life. Mine is only 36 inches. I do not grind blades with my 4 X 36. Like Sylvester says - my blade grinder is a real cheap 1 X 30:barf: . My dream grinder (someday - hope) is a 2 X 72.

You can grind blades on a 6X48" grinder. I know a couple of makers that do. They are just not as versatile as a 2X72", which has slack belt, flat platen , and hollow grinding capabilities, all in one grinder.

For the money, you may want to look at a coote grinder
Like Mike said they are more versital, you cn get a coote
for around 350 US dollars, check into that.

With all the great designs that are available online you should considered building a 2 by 72 grinder. You can buy the steel for it at a local metal fabrication shop for $50 or less and you can order a brand new contact wheel from Bertie Rietveld for around $100. Here's a link to Bertie's site.

You don't have to start with the most powerful motor or the biggest baddest belt grinder out there. You can build one for around $200 that will out grind any little hobby sander Sears sells and down the road you can upgrade it or build a better one. I know I'll never buy another grinder, they're just too simple to build and way over priced in my opnion.
Check this page out.

rlinger you actually use a 1X30 I am in the market for a grinder and well you knives are damn well impressive for using a cheap grinder I think am going to build mine but I may go the route you went (very impressive knives) I am amazed seriously

Bryce,

You are very kind to me. Thank you. Yes, though, all mine so far have been full V ground on a 40 or 50 dollar Harbor Freight 1 X 30. I guess you work with what you got and just make it work for you when that's all you got. Beats just having a file though! If you're gearing up to build one, by all means do so. I think you'll have a much better machine than I have.

The way my 4 X 36 is layed out I see no real way to grind a V with it, unless I modified it and it doesn't track. The 1 X 30 tracks for a little bit.

L6 is becomming a real buddy for me. His last post here is the kick in the butt I need. I can't afford 1500 bucks or more for a 2 X 72 and I've spent a bunch of bucks here and there building up a mini-machine shop and there is little excuse for me not building my own 2 X 72. I am going to check his links out with a determination to build my own. Thanks L6 (Micheal).

Roger

rlinger ha I could see you at the top someday
L6 is right honestly what is there to a belt sander a motor some wheels and a frame I have my plan in my head I just need to get a motor cheap

Bryce
Check ebay fo motors there are some on there,I was looking last night and came across some. There was a blador 3hp on there
and a couple others, they were new and alot cheaper than what they normally sale for.Just do a search and the items will come up.

I believe Wayne Goddard uses a 6 x 48 Sears in the horiontal position to grind some (not all) of his blades. Still the old reliable 2 x 72 is probably the best choice. Mr. Goddard's book $50 Knife Shop will show you how to build your own grinder, as well as counsel you on what to buy should you so desire.

hmm i see, kbc tools has a kinda cool belt sander, its a 2x48 belt and its mounted vertically with a grinder. sears has a little 1x30 with a 5 inch disk, theres a 2 x 42 and an 8 inch disk ill see if i can post a picture............hang on....................

also i have another question

why do we even use belt sanders? profiling can be done on a rock grinder, and a disc sander, and grinds for blades can be done on disc sanders

Yeah, you can use a "rock grinder", your results will be less than satisfactory though. Stone wheels constantly wear down, they grind hot, and they load up fast, requiring constant truing up. Plus the gray, vitreous clay wheels can literally explode, when they get internal cracks, from heat etc. That will definitely screw up your health record.
You can use anything you want, but in the long run, you will get a 2X72", and you will regret not saving the $$ spent on half measures. :D ;)

Nathan House thanks but I am too cheap to buy one for over 10 bucks my friend has a bunch of motors in his garage the one i want is a 2hp that runs on 110 volts I think if i make him a knife and give him 10 bucks he will give it to me since he has like 10 of them and he loves knives

There are a few really good grinders out there. There is one in particular, the Coote. It needs no modifications before use, and will last, and be useful, even if you get more expensive grinders in the future.

You do need to supply your own motor. But you can get a 1-2 HP TEFC, 1750 RPM motor fairly cheaply, if you look around. I would recommend starting out with a 1HP. Even if you later deem it underpowered(doubtful), you can still use it for a disc grinder.

holy ****

those are nice, so your saying any 2x72 thats either horizontal, or vertical is good? what about the one from kbc tools? its 315$$ in their online catalogue it comes with a grinder and such. but what i really wanted to know is if it is 315 american. or if its in canadian funds
