Looking at a sander

Armless bandit if the grinder goes horizontal, or vertical has nothing really to do with quality what you want is a grinder with 1+ hp motor pererabley a open contact wheel so the contact WHEEL is away from the motor there are ways around that problem but you wont want to deal with them and the belt of course to be 72X2 there really isnt much else to the machine its very simple

open contact wheel? what the F&*( well if the contact wheel is away from the motor, then what does the motor attach to make the belt spin???????????

ok i have a question that may be able to solve this, can someone explain to me what kinds of grinds i will be able to do if i purchase one of the sears belt sanders, which one is best and what those grinds are, im making a small drop point blade right now, but i dont know what kind of grind im really doing.

I guess i didnt expain it the way I wanted to how bout pully drive? here I will post some links to pics non pullydrive grizzly style

see how the motor is directly attached to the contact wheel
this is the closed style

look at the first machine the motor is in the middle under the case is a pully drive system open style it makes doing hollow grinds much easyer / actually possable without mods do you see?

hmm yes i do, im wondering what grinding im doing right now, because i like thAT MEthod a lot, i dont kno w what it is, and if i did, id tell you giys/gals what grind i do, im sure getting a sander for my needs would be MUCH easier

A 2 x 72 IS the only way to go.They are expensive but unless you are adding what might be called a specialty grinder that is the machine to get if at all possible on the financial side.In Canada a well made 2 X 72 is one made by Bee Products. Jeff Delotte at 519-978-9387 sells these as well as other supplies under the name of Downie Knives and supplies. He is a reliable honest guy to do business with Frank

your probley doing a convex or flat grind thats what people usually do when they are just grinding without trying to do a certain grind

those are nice, so your saying any 2x72 thats either horizontal, or vertical is good? what about the one from kbc tools? its 315$$ in their online catalogue it comes with a grinder and such. but what i really wanted to know is if it is 315 american. or if its in canadian funds

No I did not say that. I mentioned ONE grinder only, the Coote. In the price range you are hinting at, it is the best for the $$.

ok guys, once again you are taking me back to the expensive as hell grinders.

ok, the grind im doing is.......... i clamp my what will be a knife onto a thing, then i use a file and push it away from me over the blade. i try to have a really small andle, and i keep the file from touching the spine. Then, i have the little grind line and i use sand paper, 300 to 500 to 600 i think, and i file down so its flat and such..

and one thing my dad says is................ that if i want to make a belt sander, the tracking is hard to get, and if i want to get parts machined by buddys im going to end up buying them a bottle here bottle there and ill probably end up making a grinder that costs way more than a commercial one, and may not be as good.

now if you have ANY input on that, i want it, really bad

The Coote is the best for the money,The come in a 10 inch wheel,or an 8 or a 6 inch,The price goes from some were from 300 up to 400 or so
One problem with the grizzly is if you have a problem with the motor there goes your whole grinder, back to the shop,if you have a problem with a motor you put on the coote you only have to remove the motor.I have had both a grizzly and a Coote and the coote is a better
belt grinder and is much more versatile machine. The price I spoke of are in US dollars.

Nathan,

I looked at the Coote site. It looks like it might have a flat bar just above the contact wheel for flat grinding. I can't see it well enough to tell. Can I flat grind with the Coote?? Also, shouldn't I want the 10 inch wheel for hollow grinding??

Please and Thank you;

Roger

well what i dont understand is, do i have to buy a coote motor ? or can i use any other motor, because why pay 500 dollars or so canadian and then have to buy another coote motor????????????

Any 1hp but a 1 1/2or2hp would be better.
Why don`t you look an see if there is a knife maker
with in driving distance of your room. Then you can
see the tools that we use Bubba

HAH, ok what im doing is, im making a knife ( my first) at a knifemakers shop, and hes making knives for a show on the 24th of january i think so i cant go see him for a while, i was going to ask him, err i should say i AM, im just asking you fine people because i like having multiple opinions

Take a look at the 2" X 72" Belt grinder the Grizzly has for about $350.00. I like mine amd the optional 10" wheel is cheap.
