Looking at blanks, is this too thin?

(Forgive me if this is the wrong place for this topic)

I have been eyeing this blank from texasknife.com Looking at the dimensions, I worked out the thickness to be roughly 4.83mm (or .190in as listed). Is this too thin for a decent bowie blade? I don't want to blow my money on a sucky blank. Thanks in advance, gents!

I do not think it's to thin it is only ground to about half the blade so there is still lots of meat there.

That is true, I didn't think of that. I was just worried, because most big bowies (or big clip points in general) I see are usually 1/4" thick (Cold Steel's Natchez bowie is a whopping 8mm thick!). It would be okay to baton with then, right?

(I love the damascus pipe-hawk on your sites' gallery, by the way. Makes me want to take up smoking! :) )

I agree, blade geometry plays a big role because it can remove a lot of metal or leave a lot of metal without changing the profile. I just made this rough "forge finished" chopper with a wide bevel and think its too light for any heavy chopping duty but it cuts well. it felt heavy enough at about 3/16ths on the spine after I forged the bevels but once I ground them the rest of the way it took away from the heft of the knife. it feels more like a short sword meant to whip around than a heavy chopper. I just started forging a similar one with a hidden tang, this one I'm going to try to keep as close to 1/4 as possible.
