Looking at getting first custom knife

I have been carrying a small fixed blade regularily for a few years now. I started with the Mora #2/0 I carried that for quite a while but got the itch for something fancier. I tried a GEC bird and trout which I like but the Mora blade shape seemed better suited to my uses although the GEC handle fit my hand much better.

I have tried various other fixed blades but they all seemed lacking in one area or another.

Since I couldn't find a ready made knife I started playing around with CAD. I started with a blade very similar to the Mora and grafted it to a handle that is a modified and scaled down version of a full sized hunting knife a friend had years ago.

This is what I came up with:

I have absolutely no experience with custom knives so what I am wonder what would something like this cost?, $200 maybe?

Any recommendations for a smith that wouldn't mind working from a sketch like this.

I'm thinking O-1 or 1095 steel.

Any information with be much appreciated.

That's a very skinny knife, even for a Bird and Trout......that said, I don't know one maker on the planet that couldn't do that proposal proud, and for the vast majority of new makers , the price is right around reasonable.

Should be fine.

Hard to go wrong following above post.
I'd get someone who has a few years under their belt also.
Dozier
Accuracy beats speed

might be worthwhile to check in Exchange>Makers as I believe there are a few makers offering something quite similar at the moment

Another vote for Joe Calton...dude makes a really great working knife at a reasonable price!

The blade is about the same width as the Mora #2/0 which I like a lot.

Thanks for the suggestions, I just sent an e-mail to Joe Calton.

Been building that knife for about 5 years now. This was from our table at the local rodeo couple weeks ago.

Top one is damascus with elk, second is AEB-L with bocote and the third is AEB-L with rosewood. Originally designed with a buddy as a branding knife for ear marking and castrating calves. Its a bird and trout zipper with that AEB-L pushed to 62RC.

I rope the calf and then my partner uses his Tapadero to make this bull calf into a steer calf.

I call this knife the Tapadero in damascus and the Sonoran Belt Knife in AEB-L. Same design just different steel.

Mr Carlton makes a great knife. I have seen a couple.

Oh great another knife I am going to have to buy. Good thing I am not married or I would be losing my internet privileges over that. You ever make it in carbon steel?

Calton is going to be building me a knife, can't wait to get it.

WilliamsBuiltBlades, that is a good looking knife I like it.
