Looking at Mini 14's

Ruger has been doing a lot lately on the technological side that is extremely innovative.

The new SR-556 sport rifle, as featured in this month's Guns & Ammo magazine is an example of them taking their business to a new level in the firearms market.

There's also an article in the July 2009 issue of Gun And Ammo about the Miini-14.

You can use lots of ARs in Ca. Depending on your taste either eliminate the pistol grip or use a specialized mag release.

whats the current bbl twist on mini's now?

mine, made in '79, is IIRC a 1-10" or even a 1-12" which isnt what ya want hese days with the better heavier 556 ammo like 75gr or even 77gr or heavier.

maybe they changed it since mine was made............

I have a Colt made AR sporter.
It jammed often enough that I had retired it.
Recently, I replaced the extractor and it 'seems' to be fine now. However, I would not bet my life on it. Really should not have to mod a new gun to get it to work. Especially one originally designed for military use.
I have since replaced it with an M1A socom.
Eventually, the Wife and I will get a couple of Mini 14 NRA models. I had an older mini 14, and like a tard sold it maybe 15 years ago.
The new ones seem to be better engineered, so it'll probably work out to my advantage.

any colt AR thats not reliable has something wrong with it, bad ammo or bad mags.

either of mine is most certainly more reliable than my mini.

Back to the Guns and Ammo article about the new Mini-14's(I don't know how much one would take their word for) ,according to his tests,he was about to get MOA(sub 1" groups) accuracy but comment that it was still wasn't tack driver accuracy.

The Mini-14's are nice for the money. For around the same price or a little more you can get an AK in 5.56. The AK design has been proven over half a century and is more versatile. They are also easier to maintain and get parts for.

I bought one years ago. Personaly I didn't like anything about it. I didn't like the trigger, accuracy or ergonomics. Ended up trading it for a .44 Desert Eagle.

We carried mini 14's in our patrol cars for a couple years and we always had one down for repair. Switched to AR-15 and the officers shoot much better with them and THEY DO NOT BREAK. Plus you can customize the heck out of the AR just by changing out the upper receiver. You can change calibers and go to different barrel lengths and weights for combat or hunting/varmint shooting.I would always go with a Colt first but Rock River makes an excellent gun and Bushmaster while not as nice is a decent gun.

I never owed a mini-14 but never heard too many good things about them. I've been shooting M16's for over 19 years while in the army and only had a couple of jams because of bad worn out range magazines.

I've owned a Bushmaster AR-15 for 6 years now and probably shot over 3,000 rounds of wolf ammo and never had a jam. I went over 1,000 rounds of shooting wolf ammo without cleaning to see if it would jam and it didn't. I don't shoot wolf ammo anymore, that stuff sucks. I get great groups with good ammo and mags are super cheap. You can still get a nice AR15 for about a grand now....I'd get the AR over the mini.

i agree about the AK but i dont know i would want 556 vs 762X39 or 545x39 imho the combloc calibres are at least as good if not better, depending on what ya want 'em for anyway.

again i guess i am a traditionalist when it comes to AK's, i like just the std run of the mill stuff when it comes to them, really, imho, they are pretty close to perfect as is.
