Hey guys,

I'm in the process of building a hydraulic press and need a few pieces of 1 inch plate and am having a really hard time finding any at a decent price. The local scrapyard here does not sell to individuals, only sends scrap off to be recycled. Does anyone know of any other source I could check out that I'm not thinking of? I only need 2 pieces one about 8x10 and one about 6x10. The best price I found online was $72 for a 12x12x1. Any and all help is appreciated! Thanks

Where are you located if you are close to Indiana I can get you some np at all

Check with any local fabricating/Welding shop they might have some laying around.

Just another case of why everyone SHOULD have their location added to profile. The OP does have a location listed in profile.

Thanks man I didn't even check hope he finds it but if he was close I would just give it to him seems he isn't

This is a great suggestion. I used to drive a lot further and pay more to a steel seller, until one of my off road enthusiast buddies turned me on to the local welding shop. they have anything I need at a great price. Not all welding shops will advertise that they sell steel, but many do regardless. It's definitely worth a few phone calls.

A 12"x12 x 1" piecs is 40 pounds ish

I pay $2 a pound at a local fab shop for cold rolled steel

Cut to a small size, I'd say you're getting a fair new price

I have my own shop but I don't buy large plate in quantity so I got a couple shops that I stop by and shoot the bull and maybe have an extra burrito with me and they let me scrounge around for scrap/drops and usually if it's of usable size they will charge me 50 cents a pound or just let me take it for the burrito...everybody likes a free burrito Right!!!!

I know I do!

Thanks for all the input guys, I'm going to check around for a fab shop in my area when I wake up tomorrow. I work midnights, so it makes it tough to get stuff done when I don't get up until 2pm. There is also a steel supplier here, but usually they don't sell small pieces like that, but maybe they have some scrap. I guess I'll find out tomorrow!

You might check some local fab and welding shops for some drops, but other than that, just do a search for nearby steel suppliers/distributors. You might look to see if Alro has any trucks through your area, or ask the local shops where they source their steel if they don't have any drops for you.
