I'm in the market for a new large fixed blade outdoors knife. I've owned and used several over the years and I know exactly what features I'd like in such a knife. Now, I just need help finding it.

I'm looking for something with a 10" long blade and a 1/4" thick. The best 10" chopper I've ever used is my old Ontario SP-5. I've since had an RTAK II and a Junglas but I didn't like the wider, flatter, thinner blade.

Honestly, the SP-5 is a great knife, I just don't like the tip design. I find the upswept tip with sharpened upper clip to be less than optimal for most tasks.

I really like the blade shape of the old Becker Brute and I'd like something with a similar recurved drop point.

I also liked the shape of the Kershaw Outkast and Camp 10 but neither have proven to be very robust designs.

I'd prefer either 1095 or 5160 steel.

Suggestions?

There's actually some good-looking large recurve choppers in the fixed blade second of the custom knife makers subforum here, the prices are higher than production but some look pretty sweet and have good steel too. I dunno how much you're looking to spend.

for production knives, the Ontario SP-52 has a 10" blade and good recurve shape with a simple point.

What you're looking for is a CAMILLUS-made BK4.

Essentially the same great 9.5" recurved chopping beast as the current KABAR-made BK4 except it's .25" thick.

But isn't that model stamped, which was thought to create stress risers?
Mind you, I Love my current gen BK4. It is honestly one of my favorite knives.

Look at Ban Tang or Nathan the Machinist, Both of whom are Craftsmen here. Get a Custom piece, and don't look back.

What problems have been reported with the camp 10? I have one that I haven't been able to try out yet.

It's a bit longer and not a recurve but, check out the Tops Power Eagle. It's supposed to be a great mid priced chopper. I have been considering one myself. Check out the Tops Armageddon too.

Also, Benchmade has a Jungle Bolo which is close to what you want while only 0.195" thick.

It's not .250" but you may be pleasantly surprised with the KaBar Becker BK-4, especially at their soon-to-be-discontinued price point.

You might want to check out Gossman Knives. Scott offers a Bolo model, a Big Boar Tusker, and has started making Big Boar Tusker 2.0.

I'd buy that Benchmade in a heartbeat if it was a 1/4" thick. The extra weight of the 1/4" stock seems to really make a blade bite deeper with much less effort.

While I find kukris to be excellent choppers and decent stabbers, they are very awkward for most other knife tasks.
