Looking for a 3-3.5" fixed blade

I've just come through the "research" phase as well and have decided on an EnZo Trapper in O1 and will likely buy some thicker wood scales than those which come in the EnZo kit.

From all reports, the Trapper comes wicked sharp (in it's "Scandi" blade grind configuration), is very nimble in the hand and nicely sized/proportioned for most users.

The Trapper also fits well within your budget goal as well.

Because you mentioned the boot-knife option, check out the BlackJack Model 12.

Blackjack 155 or BK14 with scales and custom kydex would be my choice, spartan enyo for a little more $.

Another vote for dpx here. The heft II would suit fine and isn't 1095, so less maintenance. Solid performer and pry bar on end is DAMN handy for all those tip braking occasions

Once of the reasons I keep recommending the Trapper is that the grip size is so comfortable. If you do find it lacking, it might be worth considering some G10 spacers rather than making new scales. (Note that I say that, I'm thinking mine might have them - I'll have to look.
