I am thinking of a semi-auto AR varient but wouldnt be opposed to a bolt action like the Kimber Tactical.

Any recomendations?

Check out Rock River Arms, but if it doesn't have to be an AR variant, why not a Springfield Armory SOCOM?

A tactical .308? How about a smooth feeding bolt action holding 12 rounds? Think Ishapore Enfield.

Heck, if you're not adamant on a .308, why not look into the classic Lee-Enfield .303? You can get em cheap, and can still find surplus ammo (most of it corrosive, tho) for not too much $. But I think in .308, hard to go wrong with Springfield. If you can find an M14, that is an awesome rifle.

No doubt. I'm astonished at the smoothness and accuracy of my Enfield .303 Has to be one of the best battle rifles ever produced.

For a mag fed "tactical" rifle, I'd go with my DSA FAL, although my Savage .308 Scout is about as accurate.

Indeed. I got a great deal on it, para, 18" medium contour barrel, match trigger, duracoated, with a Leupold 1.5-5x tactical in a LaRue mount.

Can't get much better.

Depends on what you want..

Nice thing about the Fn Fal Variants is you can still find Cheep surplus mags for about $8

vs for $40 for m1a mags.. I prefear the ergo's of the M1a but that is just me, havent been a fan of any of the Ar 308's ive shot.

Next one for me is a 700 LTR

Robert, you are a man after my own heart. Before I bought my AR, I almost pulled the trigger (no pun intended) on a FAL very like the one you describe. Still on my wish list.

I like the SA SOCOM I a lot actually but they are quite expensive are they worth the $$$$?

The Savages are without a doubt the best bang for the buck allowing you to buy better optics than you would for the same total with other rifles. The Savages consistently perform as well as many much more expensive rifle out of the box.

However I prefer mine quiet for tactical use...

.300 Whisper, upper built by J.D. Jones. 220 grain .308 moving at 1100fps. great accuracy out to 300yards. Even unsuppressed they provide a hard hitting caliber that uses standard AR mags and can be swapped on and off your .223 AR easily.

I am basically looking for an accurate out of the box tactical rifle in either bolt or semiauto that I can tell my wife I bought for deer hunting which I will use it for (so I do need a good deer cartrage) but I will use it more for target shooting. I was thinking .308 because it is readily available and pretty cheap to shoot but so is 30-06 what do you guys think?

Surplus 308 still shows up at decent prices, 30-06 does too but much of it is corrosive. Also 308 is a short action round and 30-06 is a long action round which means the 308 has a shorter bolt throw. The shorter bolt throw means faster follow-up shots with less chance of the bolt binding. I would lean towards the .308 for those reasons. If nothing else you can get remanufactured ammo from companies like Black Hill, great ammo at bargain prices. I still would go with Savage for the price and accuracy, and spend a little more on a good scope.

H&K 91's are the bomb but are a little expensive.

if i wanted a .308 auto i'd get a M1A, of the SOCOM variety.
