I'm hunting for a 5" fixed blade knife.

I can't believe I haven't noticed this until now, but most fixed blades jump from 4" (or some at 4.5") and then they jump to 6".

There aren't many fixed blades with 5" blades. Noticed that?

I'm looking for something for under $125 retail or $100 forum value.

You can find a Fallkniven S1 for that range if you shop carefully. It's 5" of laminated VG-10 goodness!

If you're like me, and your idea of a 'tactical' fixed blade is more light and fast, you're pretty much stuck with the rather expensive new Spyderco Temperance II, or the super expensive new Al Mar SERE Operator. I can only think of a few more, SOG's Northwest Ranger and Team Leader, and Spyderco's discontinued Perrin (FB04), which should all be in your price range, if you can find them. I've almost bought a Northwest Ranger several times, but I can't seem to make myself pay that much for an AUS 6 blade. Good luck!

Ontario's OKC Ranger Series Afghan would no doubt fit any tactical role well. Excellent beefy 5160 steel 5 inch blade.

Light and fast works for me too. Also a tip that can be used for prying and good penetration. For $250, Reese Weiland is building me a fixed blade version of this:

Mine will be 6" blade at 1' overall. Made from .160" Ti with black micarta slabs.

spyderco fred perrin. ridiculous knife. i have to admit though, that ontario afghan looks incredible for a bigger tougher medium sized fixed blade

A $72 MSRP Buck 105 Pathfinder is hard to beat for a 5" fb utility knife. If the black phenolic handle and Al fg & pommel are too basic, consider Bass Pro's 'cherrywood $ brass' variant - or their bone handled one - $60-$80 with decent sheaths, too. Not a true tactical knife, but quite good for the woods, etc. For a great 'tactical' Buck fb, albeit with a 6.5" blade, consider the Buck 650 plain edge Nighthawk - or the 4.9" mostly serrated 655 Short Nighthawk, until recently available from Wally World ~$40. All are US-made, except the Mexican or PRC sheaths.

My BP 105 & 650 Nighthawk are keepers. They are nothing like my Rat RC5, of course.

I just had a Pathfinder and thought the blade was a bit think. I do like the Nighthawk, but the sheathes for them are horrible!

Go with the SOG Northwest Ranger. Not a lot of flash, bells and whistles, but a solid, reliable performer.

I had one. Didn't care for the coarse satin finish or the fit and finish of the blade/handle interface or the way the rubber fit the handle.
