looking for a close-toed shoe that i can wear running and walking around that will get me as close to barefoot as possible...

in order to race in highschool you need to wear closed-toe shoes (but there is no such rule in college and professional level races  ) so i have been wearing my cheapest (and thinnest) sneakers to run in when i have to, but these still have a pretty large heel wedge (looks like close to 1").

also, in the cooler months and in snow, going barefoot can be mighty chilly...and i would like to be able to run races basically barefoot. this is more of a big deal with longer distances, where a large heel wedge causes fatigue in my calves (like high heels for women). for sprints it is not really noticeable, but i would rather not have to think about it at all.

so i already know what i can wear to give me some sole protection in the warm months and when there are no regulations for footware, but i'm interested in finding basically a sheet of rubber with a sock attached...

even in the winter when i can't stand to have my feet exposed, i still want to maintain an un-impeded cadence and keep my ankles and foot muscles strong.

can anyone help me out? or will i have to resort to rubber tool dipping a pair of socks? (;))

some moccasins wight work but i dont know if you can get any sort of traction woth those. i posted a thread a while ago regarding moccasins, and someone posted about a rubber sock thing. ill try to find that thread.

I beleive the simple indoor track shoes are much thinner in the heal than "running" shoes..I had a pair in highschool...it was a short lived fad in my school..I had to fit in..they were pretty light weight though.

i have thought about some track shoes...i should get a pair anyways now that i'm a decent runner...but worry about the bottom wearing out prematurely on roads and stuff.

i'm going to check some out in the local sporting goods store soon.

i forgot to mention i have another problem with shoes...i have a borderline really big shoe size...13/14...so its hard to find shoes that fit right...or shoes that even come close sometimes...

fobic, looking forward to seeing what you mean about the rubber sock.

snow-when i can, i do, within reason. its funny, when i put on a pair of some cheap thin chaco style sandals i suddenly feel invincible like i'm wearing huge steel toe army boots...

The indoor track shoes wont last a a really long time Simon, but they should fit the bill, and they usually run about $45 which is pretty cheap for shoes lately. You might check ebay..I bought some really great sneakers for $20 shipped last month..Sketchers I think. Gene

So now you're thinking about wearing shoes. My, my haven't we gotten soft :p:D By the way, Richard never wears shoes, even in the winter, and he does just fine

thanks for the suggestions guys, i'll take a look into them.

theo-i know, i should be hardcore and just forget all clothing at all... but in my defense (and to richard's credit) he has been doing it his whole life, i've just started about 6 months ago. i need some time to get used to it...perhaps someday though i will match richard's abilities.

fobic, looking forward to seeing what you mean about the rubber sock.

http://www.vibramfivefingers.com/products/products_footwear.cfm that is a link to the site that describes the rubber socks.

http://www.bladeforums.com/forums/showthread.php?t=584340 here is a thread i posted a while ago that also has alot of reccomendations that would probably suite your needs.

size 14! that is huge. i am 6'4'' and i only wear 13. maybe i ll get to 14 by the time im done growing.

Ask for (or google for) "racing shoes." Most people race in training shoes, but there are special shoes made just for racing. The idea is you don't need a lot of protection while you're racing because you don't put in a lot of miles in actual races -- what you need is the absolute minimum weight.
