Looking for a beater knife to keep in get home bag/survival kit

Dangerous territory haha. What are your opinions of the bk2? what do you use it for? do you think it would be a good knife to put in my hiking pack?

"You can't go wrong buying a bk2, especially for a knife you can rely on."

Couldn't be more in agreement. They are heavy tho, for such a short knife. I bought an Esee 5 for my other hand to keep me from listing to one side. ;)

The bk2 will seem heavy at first, especially when you're use to a smaller blade. However I edc'ed mine for almost a year, and after a week didn't notice it anymore.

The bk2 is a solid knife (in basically all ways of meaning it). I'm sure you'd like it.

For hiking imo its just too large and heavy though. Have you checked out the bk16? Also the bk10 is very similar in size, and is a touch lighter.

The bk2 was my first "real" knife, and I learned a lot from it. However, if I was to "start over" today, id be grabbing a 10 or 16 before the 2, as I just don't use my 2 as much anymore.

But congrats on the new steel :).

Couldn't hurt to mention, if it hasn't been already, is the Condor Hidson Bay knife. With a little work you the handle can be modified.

Thanks for all the replies. I'll definitely be buying the bk2 next to keep in my hiking pack.
I will warn you thou, the bk2 is the gateway drug into the world of Becker. Soon after purchasing it you'll have an overwhelming sensation to buy a bk9, then 16, then 14, then a 4, can't not have a 15, and it goes on until you find yourself sitting on a pile of Beckers and an overwhelming need to destroy things made of wood.

The BK-2 is a great knife. I find it too "robust" for normal knife cutting needs whether in camp, on the trail, or in my back yard. I would go with the similar BK-10 or the larger BK-7.

The BK-2 was my first Becker. I just find it too heavy to carry for it's size. But it would make a very good truck knife (survival/emergency bag). Mine stays in its box these days unless I dig it out to fondle for some reason or to refresh my memory of the knife. I much prefer the BK-15 (discontinued) or the BK-16 for my general woods stuff.

I'm partial to longer blades. A longer blade can do what a smaller blade can do, albeit with some level of awkwardness, but a smaller blade can't do what a larger blade can achieve. For the price I may just get the BK9. They're not all that different in price, and with christmas money coming hehe, I'll probably buy the BK9, then the BK2

Similar feelings regarding the bk2.
0.25" thick on a 5.25" blade that weighs nearly one lb. all seemed redundant to me. Fine knife for what it is, but to me It fealt like a sharp metal brick.

That's why i opted for the combo option;
bk15, much better profile for a 5.5" blade IMO
Plus the bk5 for "chopping" duties, at 8" long it's still almost 4oz lighter then the 2... And 0.19" thick it's still plenty thick enough to chop quite well, and with it's length it can also be used as a small Machete to clear trails.

The two combined gives me more versatility, and more knife period, and only weighs 2.5oz more "if" I opt to carry both...

I don't have the BK-5. May have to change that and give it a try also. Eventually, you end up buying just about all of the Becker knives as something comes up (like this thread) and you say to yourself.... think I might give the BK-5 a try and add another to the pile.

I don't think you'd go wrong with the BK-9. It is a bit more knife than I want routinely, but you like or are used to larger knives as far as using. The BK-7 is the one that many say is not useful.... but when you don't have a BK-9, it is useful. I generally use short machete type blades (mostly Condors) if I expect to be doing a fair amount of chopping. So, the BK-7 is still a pretty large knife to me.

The 9 is an excellent choice as well, it'll make short work of any chopping or batoning task, but can carve like a small knife.

I like all the suggestions above, but here's another way to go. I have a similar bag, a get-home-bag, in my vehicle, but it contains a hand axe and a short fixed blade, Mora-like. Gerber Back Paxe. But an Estwing or a common camp hatchet would work, too.

Already have a Mora in the bag. The LMF version with the firesteel in the handle. Works wonders on lighting a petroleum jelly soaked cotton ball. I have purchased an Ontario marine combat knife to keep in the bag. It is heavy enough to chop with. I do not like hatchets.

It really is, for all intents and purposes, just bk15 on steroids... Slight differences, but same overall design and profile.

I had a Cold Steel GI Tanto in my escape bag. I picked it because it is very low priced and very tough.
Back then I worked in a highrise office building and I had heard stories of people trying to escape the World Trade Center attack by cutting through walls and such. My escape bag had the knife and a piece of 2x4 that could be used as a baton, a good sized pry bar, and a big flashlight. Short of a long rope ladder I thought this gear would give me the best chance of escaping in the building had a big fire or something like that.

You are going to want a knife that you can keep in the bag and forget about it. A knife that you want to handle, etc is a bad idea, as you will be too tempted to take it out and play with it. That is why I have a cheap Cold Steel SRK in AUS8 as my get home bag knife.

Since you want a full tang knife, I'd recommend a schrade extreme survival knife. For the price of a Becker, you can get 2, and keep one in each car.
