hi

can someone help me by naming me some very large folders? i'd like a one-hander with a large blade. that is, of at least 4 to 4.5", bigger is better. the total lenght however when opened should not pass 11". what i'm looking for thus, to give you an example, knives like the camillus cuda maxx 5.5" are what i'm searching for, only that particular knife is slightly to long in total lenght......please help

TOPS CQT Magnum 747 in hunters (clip) point.

http://www.topsknives.com/products_pages/productdetail/cqtmagnums.html

I've pried open a door (putting my full body weight laterally on the kinfe), took down a deer and cut the bottom front quartter panel off an SUV (using a baton). Used it hard in the wilderness on extended trips. It's the only folder I've experienced that holds up almost to the standard of a fixed blade. Liner is stainless steel instead of titanium (so it doesn't flex easily and perhaps disengage). Also, the hinge pin is much larger than most folders, for added strength.

Certainly make your own decision -- just sharing my experience here. Go for this or look at the Strider folders -- AR or other similar folder made by them. Theor folder are also strong as tanks.

Best,

Brian.

You ARE looking for a Cold Steel Vaquero Grande. That monster muther has a 6 inch-long fully-serrated blade, with a 13 inch total opened length...They don't get much "meaner" than that one!..

thanks for the post glockman, but it musn't be bigger an overall lenght of 11".....;-)

like the TOPS though Brian, that's exactly the sort of stuff i'm looking for.

any other additions and recommendations still welcomed!!! what knife would you say fits required specs and use (it's supposed to be a 'replacement' for a fixed blade, so i can carry it legally over here in The Netherlands). i don't like tiny folders, i want a big one!,..but not too big..

If you want a cheaper one the CRKT large Crawford/Kasper with the LAWKS system has a 4 inch blade and is about 7" long opened. It's also only about $65 dollars. I've had mine for about a month now, haven't given it any hard use, but I think it should stand up to most things fairly well.

Seki Cut. Bob Lum design. Probably the biggest folder in my possession. D2 blade, micarta handle, nice looking knife.

Try a Kershaw 1416-XXL Starkey Ridge. ATS-34 blade, Titanium liners, G-10 Scales. They're discontinued but they're still around.

Cuda has just released a Aftermath at the shot show.
See a pic in the Camilus forum.

The Gerber Applegate Combat has a 4.5" blade and a length of 10 1/4" open. The SOG Pentagon Elite II has a 5" blade and a length right at 11" open. :)

THe blade is slighly less than what you mentioned at 3.75 inches, but the Spyderco Chinook is hard to beat.

I don't like the TOPS that much, it somehow feels like a magnyfied version of a regular folder (meaning that it looks like it wasn't designed with the huge size in mind).

The Chinook and the Maxx suggestions are great.

I can't believe no one has recommended the Camillus Cuda Maxx, Bowie blade. 5.5 in flat ground blade, anodized titanium handle, frame lock (super strong) and, surprisingly, it vanishes into your pocket. You can pick one up on eBay for about $100 these days, while the hype concentrates on the newer model, the stiletto blade, which is far less useful with apparently inferior quality control.

hi santa cruz

the cuda maxx 5.5 is what started my post in the first place. i saw this folder and thought 'wow, a BIG folder'. thing is though, the total opened length is beyond 11", and that's too big
