I'm looking for something along the same blade design (length/shape/etc) as a Blackjack Marauder Mk1 or 2. Does anyone know of a similar product?

Two configurations of the Mk1 (9.5" blade)

... & two of the Mk2 (15"blade)

Thanks :D

What's their rep like? I saw alot of 440 SS & ABS Plastic in their large blades.

You wouldn't happen to have a link to what you had in mind, would you? Tnx

That was the link. Sorry. I see it sends you to the home page. You'll find the Bolo in the "Machete & country" part of their website. It's item #658.

About their reputation: they build some knives for Spyderco. (the Volpe folder, and the Hossom designed fixed blades if I'm not mistaking) If it's good enough for Spyderco, it's good enough for me!

I can feel your pain, brother. It's hard to find a good chopper thats doesn't double as an emergency anchor/cinder block. The blackjack looks like a pretty good design - I don't like the false-edge grind though (keep as much weight as possible on that tip! I'm not going to stab a rhino out there, I just want to chop).

Check these out:

And may I suggest:

(not a bolo but still a good chopper; I have one. Chisel grind is annoying though)

That's my Junglee Military Bolo. Pretty nice to have in thicker vegetation, and actually a decent chopper on light stuff. I try to stay out of the thicker valleys so I don't often pack it along these days. I think the steel is AUS-8, but very sharp.

Okay, NOW you guys are feelin' me. Thank you very much for the submissions & the good leads ^_^

If you're talking about the top pic that I posted (BJ Marauder Mk1), that's not a false edge. They actually made that one double edged. More of a combat knife than a chopper. Kinda their version of a kukri. I believe it was a copy of some Turkish design. Not sure, tho, so don't quote me on that.

I really like some of those Japanese blades, I'll be definitely checking some of those out. I may go to sunrisecustomknives.com for a custom handle, tho, I liked the big chopper you listed, but not the cord handle it comes with.

I keep seeing BlackJack Dirks and a few hunters and such, new on the market. I don't imagine that these are all just remaining surplus, so who's running BlackJack now & why aren't they putting out Mambas and Marauders & such?

Yeah, I'm familiar with HI, but thanks for the reminder, I'll look over there. You can never get tired of looking at good stuff, can you? :D

Never...
My HI blades actually call to me to take them out and caress them (well ok all my knives do that, but with HI the call is a little stronger ;) )

Hey, those big Sirupati are kinda sick aren't they? Looks like I have some more to add to "The List"... thanks.

Gotcha: not a false edge, but a real edge... sorry, I call any edge, sharp or not, thats on the back-side of a blade a false edge (unless its a dagger).

Yeah, I have mixed feelings about the cord handle. That knife does come in two sizes (OAL 18" or OAL 12" approx), if that wasn't in the links I sent you.

Personally, I don't like the recurve edge, which is why I am partial to these Japanese knives (the kanetsune has a SLIGHT recurve). Two reasons: sharpening is trickier, and (many people don't think/care about this) a recurve won't work on a cutting board (as in food). I also like the leather sheaths that these knives come with. I think you want that thing to look as harmless as possible if you are going to take it camping or somewhere that people/cops might catch a peek (to me, kydex just looks menacing, especially on a big nasty chopper).

Let me know if you do get the Kanetsune, I'm very curious how it performs. Also, I would make sure that it's not chisel ground, because those Japanese companies have a habit of not mentioning that. I think a chisel grind has no place on a chopper. The G. Sakai is chisel-ground, and I have to approach a branch at one angle if I'm cutting from the right, and a different angle if I'm cutting from the left. Also, although the handle shape/size is good, it has a crappy Rambo-style screw cap hollow-out. Fortunately, the hollow-out is only 2" deep, so at least some tang remains. Still, the knife kicks ass on bramble, and anything green. I bought it from Japan, and shipping was fast (I'm in Philly, the knife took 3 days to get to me whereas a package from Cali takes 5 days; go figure), cheap, and customs was pre-paid.

May the force be with you.

Also, have you (or anyone else) seen/tried the Extrema Ratio kukri?

There's things I like and don't like (price is crazy, for starters; handle looks like you might send that blade flying out of your hand), but I would like to hear from anyone who's actually seen/used one. (I heard reviews that said the handle was good...)

I've "seen" one. Actually I have one.:D

The handle is actually quite comfortable, and you can attach a lanyard if you want. It's their biggest model, the KH.

DAMN ! ! !

Me wants on of those Extrema Ratio KH's :D

I've got a Nemesis and there's a T1000 on the way.

How 'bout a bolo from Reflections of Asia? Villager quality worker. Hand forged for $25, can't be beat. They won't win any beauty contests but dollar for dollar they're one of the best deals out there.
