Looking for a Carbon Blade stockman.

The Case #47 is the best size (in between the #18 and #75), but finding one in CV for under $50 will be a challenge.

My choice now is between the Case medium size and large size stockman in dark red bone. Ah decisions, decisions.... Insight please? Easy of carry vs blade size and usefulness.... Can't get both right now [emoji22]

I'd go with an 18 model stockman (length closed: 3 5/8 ") or a 47 model, which has rounded bolsters making it fairly pocket friendly despite being 3 7/8" closed.

Another option you might consider is a Sowbelly, though I'm not certain you can find one under $50 (the yellow CV models are just over that price point, and bone handled ones about $10 north of that). They're also 3 7/8" closed.

BTW, this page lists all of Case's carbon steel (or CV) models.

Go type in "case medium Stockman cv".
Winning!

Can't go wrong with either a Case Large Sockman 6375 CV or a Medium Stockman 6318 CV.

Correct me if I'm wrong but since all steels contain other substance, aren't they all alloys??

Boker 7474 would be my recommendation. I like the Case 47 too in this price range but the Boker 7474 is my preferred of the two as, in my personal experience, the Boker has better walk & talk and is less likely to have blade rub than the Case. Watch out for Boker dealers who confuse "High Carbon Stainless Steel" for "Carbon Steel" though.

Yeah the jump from 18 (medium) to 75 (large) Case is too big IMO. If only they could make an intermediate sized one. I don't know that I'll buy another Case stockman, only because they don't fit that well.

Just saw the post about the 47, looks like I'll be picking one of them up!

Here is a Boker carbon Stockman I bought recently from a forum member.

Nice link, thanks for sharing. The funny thing is that is shows a picture of the Backpocket model with yellow Derlin (which I have never seen), but then doesn't actually list it as a model :(

Great pics guys. Beautiful knives! I just ordered the medium in dark red bone and cv steel. I'll post some pics when it arrives

Here's a pic of my great grandfather's knife no longer in service that got me wanting a new one of my own to pass on to my future grandkids. Now I'll just need a few more for the many offspring I foresee coming my way [emoji1]

If you're interested in getting some older carbon stockmans, you can readily find some very nice condition Schrade Waldens. I picked this one up on the Bay for like $26 I think. It's the 834 pattern, 3-1/4" closed so it may be on the small side for you, but disappears in the pocket while packing a good amount of blade. I don't have the before picture, but it came pretty patina'd. Blades, springs, bolsters, scales etc. After a few hours of cleaning, scrubbing, sanding and sharpening, it came out looking like many I saw selling for 3x as much.

Got my medium stockman in the mail today. It's smaller than I thought it would be. Looks like I should of got the Jumbo. Oh well, maybe the wife will listen to me and get me the Jumbo for Father's Day. Still love looks of this one in Dark Red bone. Here's some pics of it still in the process of getting it's Orange patina.

Looking good! Let us know how it meets (I wouldn't imagine it would fail) your needs. And for fun, use it as a steak knife, it's always a treat to watch the colors form during the course of a meal, and it adds patina over time.

PS Doesn't the pen blade seem so gracefully fitting in line with the curve of the knife? The Case medium stockmans really have great lines on that third blade, better than any I've owned.

Yeah Connor, this thing looks great. Here it is wearing my edge and next to my modern carry. It will be replacing my SAK Cadet as secondary carry (or should I say primary).
