I live in new York and I can't legally carry a spring assist so I wanted a recommendation on a good non auto (which limit my options). I like the Ontario rat 1 in cayote brown but this is a spring assist do you think I could just take the spring out?
I'm looking for something heavy duty around 50 dollars

Non auto limits your choices to several thousand knives:)
We need more details to be able to help you, such as:

traditional or modern style
Blade length
Blade type (shape, serrations, color etc)
Price, because what is cheap to some may not be cheap to you

With that knife I am not sure about taking out the spring. That does not work well with some knives because the spring holds the blade closed

spyderco makes some really great inexpensive ( I hate the word cheap when talking price :) ) knives. The tenacious/persistence or even the delica make for truly great EDC knives. I don't think I have ever seen an assisted Rat folder so that's news to me if its true. It is a really great knife though.

I agree on the Spyderco option. If you want really inexpensive then maybe consider an Opinel - they are basic and look a bit old fashioned but very nice cutters.

Definitally modern, under 4 inch blade but not mini, I don't mind serrations, Nor do I have an opinion on color or shape I just want something that is tough and will hold an edge I'm looking to spend around $50 :)

I always carry a leatherman but I've been needing a bigger knife because I use it a lot so it looses its edge too fast.

go spyderco all the way..... since when are RAT 1's spring assisted!!???!! Am i missing out on something amazing here???

Kershaw skylines are definitely assisted same problem :(

Skyline and Rat 1 are both manual folders. The Skyline has a good sized blade in a small light weight package. The Rat 1 is a solid work horse of a budget blade. Solid, strong, and fast. Both would be good options but if you prefer an opening hole the Spydies would be a sweet choice as well.

The skyline fits into your budget, and so does the delica. You can also browse the for sale forums for a better knife at a discount.

I like the endura, but believe the ffg delica is almost a perfect edc around that price point. I would skip the serrations and keep it sharp.

One could argue that it almost perfect at any price point for that matter. I prefer my small sebenzas, but not by that much from a practical standpoint.

Love that color combo!!

Search ontario rat 1 brown it's a new colorway and they are all spring

While I agree on the awesome color selection, your information about the opening mechanism is inaccurate. They may be as fast as an assisted opener, but there is no spring.
