Hey everyone, I am looking for a new knife to carry at my college that I will ne attending. At the college you can have a knife that is 3 inches or less. I am looking for a knife preferably not a sak that is under 3 inches. Also I would prefer that it be a axis lock, back lock, liner lock or frame lock. My price range is 50-200. For steel I am looking at vg10, s30v, s35vn, or 20cv. Please let me know what you recommend.

Welcome.

I see you do not want a SAK. Do you have one or a multitool like a Leatherman already?

Like Ed said, the Native 5 is a great choice.

I’m planning on giving my college bound son a UK Pen Knife for Christmas. It’s non-locking and under 3”. My thinking is it’s about as politically inoffensive as a modern folder can be, just in case someone gets weird. Bonus for you, it’s easy to afford on a student budget and you’ll have cash to pick up a Sharpmaker (if you don’t have one already).

Although I’m not personally a Benchmade fan, I’ve been eyeballing the 485 Valet lately and might pick one up if I can find a good sample at a shop somewhere. Pretty classy little knife.

Benchmade Mini Griptilian would be my go-to for a sub 3” folder. If you can spring for the -1 models(G10/20CV) then you’re absolutely set. I personally don’t mind the Valox handles on my mini, but it bothers some. Plus you get 20CV! Hard to beat that. You can find them for close to $125 on the exchange, they run about $40 more new. But you’ll be getting a knife that’ll last a life time especially considering Benchmade’s bombproof warranty.

The CruWear PM3 would be my second suggestion. CruWear is a fantastic steel as well.

Spyderco Delica FFG in VG-10.
Also, the basic Para 3 in S30V. The Para 3 is a compression lock, but would fit in nicely with your preferred lock types, as it's like a combination of a reverse liner lock and a back lock.

Put a version of the Spyderco Sage on your list to consider. Blade is right at 3.0 inches, cutting length like 2.65. I own a Sage 1. It's a great little knife.

Spyderco Delica is a good choice, meets all criteria and is even pretty budget-friendly. I paid $65 for mine, because it's gray. $75 usually.

It's just under 3" blade length. Flat ground and with a reasonable blade thickness, so you can slice apples with it reasonably easily.

I had one for years and years; loved it, but got bored of it and sold it. Now I have another and it is like an old friend.

I usually do front or rear pocket in my jeans and yes I prefer a pocket clip

In the Buck line, the new 112 Slim Pro, the Spitfire and medium Vantage are all pocket clip carry, all at the 3" blade limit and all available in S30V in your price range.

The 943 is over 3 inches. 555-1 or 556-1, whichever blade shape and opening style you like better. 555-1 is a little more utilitarian looking. But I personally like thumb studs more than the spydie hole, so 556-1 for me.

I carried a skeletool cx when I was in school.
